Of the four species of Lynx, the Bobcat is the smallest in size. It has successfully colonized a number of habitats in North America, including forest, mountain, semidesert and scrubland. Even with all the extensive hunting and trapping, which still continues, there are believed to be up to one million bobcats in
the United States alone. They range from Southern canada to central Mexico. Its spotted coat gives camouflage among rocks and bush vegetation. It gets its name from its short stumpy tail. They weigh up to 35 lbs. Head and body can be up to 3 feet 4 inches long with a tail of up to 7 inches. Bobcats mainly hunt cottontail rabbits, also rodents, small deer and large ground dwelling birds. In winter, the bobcat locates mice by listening for them moving beneath the snow, and then pins them down with its paws. |
