The Jaguar is the only big cat to be found in the American continents.
They are found in northern South America and parts of Central America
and Mexico. They usually live in dense areas of the forest, close to water.
They are also found in savanna and scrub. The Jaguar is the third largest
cat and resembles the Leopard. The Jaguar has shorter legs and tail and a
larger head and body than the Leopard. Head and body can measure up to
6 feet with a tail of up to 2 1/2 feet. They weigh in at around 250 lbs.
Jaguars are good climbers. They make their dens in caves or canyons. They
are the dominant carnivore in their habitat. No other predator is large
enough to compete with the jaguar for food.
The Jaguar diets on peccaries, capybaras, tapirs, monkeys, armadillos, river
turtles, fish, otters, caimans, and domestic livestock as large as horses.
They prefer to hunt at night.
