The Sandcat is one of the few cats that truly live in the desert. It
can be found in the Sahara desert as well as desert areas of Asia. It
digs burrows under sand dunes where it sleeps during the heat of the
day and hunts at night. It is small with a body length of only about
20 inches and has very short legs. The cats fur blends great with its
surroundings. The paws are covered with thick mats of fur to help it
maneuver on slippery sand. The Sandcat can survive without drinking
much water. Its diet is mostly desert rodents, hares, birds, reptiles
(lizards and snakes), and insects. When it kills it consumes the preys
body fluids first to fulfill its daily requirement of liquid.
