The American Studies II Honors course is a
challenging class. Designed for college-bound juniors, this course
examines American history, society and culture from the Reconstruction
period following the Civil War to the present. Solid
reading and writing skills, along with a willingness to examine a
number of issues that we have faced as a nation are necessary to
succeed. Emphasis is placed on critical and evaluative thinking skills,
essay writing, interpretation of original documents, and historiography.
During the year, students will
participate in varied class activities that require considerable
preparation outside our classroom. Assignments will be given well in
advance, and students are asked to keep their notebooks, reading and
research up to date.
Grading
The quarterly grade in United States
History will be calculated by a cumulative point system. All
assignments will be assigned a numerical point value, and students will
accumulate points during the term, based on the quality of their work.
Notebooks and 3-ring binders are required, and will be checked
periodically. A student’s participation in all class activities will
also factor into his/her grade. Students and parents are encouraged to
contact me whenever there is a question about
class or homework, or if I can answer any question for you.
Instructional Methods
There will be a variety
of methods utilized in this course, including lecture and note taking,
role playing and debate, cooperative group work and historical
simulations. Powerpoint and video presentations will also be assigned.
This year, you will also
be required to work on-line frequently. The home page for the
course, http://home.comcast.net/~kmj53/ev.html
, will
contain your syllabus, assignments, historical
readings and important links. Students are encouraged to check
the site daily, and email me at
esj4176@aol.com whenever you have a question. Finally,
students are encouraged to actively participate in all class
activities, especially class discussion. This is a key component
of our class, and will further your understanding of the material
greatly.
Materials
The primary text
for the course is The Americans
from McDougal Littell. Students will also use a variety of other
sources, many of which I have linked to my website. There will also be
some readings and videotapes.
Please feel free to call me at the high
school or email me at ESJ4176@aol.com whenever
you wish!
