RULES AND PERMISSION SLIP
In April we will travel on our ACIS program. For
some of you, this will be the first time you have been so far away from
home
without your families, and you need to understand some basic
guidelines.
Your impressions of new countries and people will
very
much depend on how you deal with being a stranger in a strange land.
You
are the visitor, and you must not expect a foreign visit to provide the
same
conveniences or same systems to which you are accustomed. The telephone
system
may work differently. The currency may be confusing to you. The food
may
be different from your normal diet. There may even be some delays and
inconveniences.
Plan to be able to come to terms with these differences with calmness
and
an open mind. People will be friendly and helpful to you if you come
across
in the same manner to them. Do not look at everything through the lens
of
a camera before looking at it with your own eyes. Your memories will be
your
more pleasurable moments, not just hasty snapshots. Many of the things
you
learn will last a lifetime.
Be cautious and mindful of your own safety at all
times.
While abroad, you may confront new, unfamiliar potential hazards; and,
therefore,
you must be cautious and deliberate at all times, and watch your steps
carefully.
The following regulations are designed to protect
your
own safety, as well as the safety of others while traveling. They are
no
more than simple common sense. It is your responsibility to abide by
these
regulations at all times:
1. In keeping with Oliver Ames High
School/Easton Public Schools alcohol policy, students will not be
permitted to have a glass of wine with dinner under any circumstances.
2. If a student wishes to visit a friend or relative
while
overseas and temporarily leave the program, a letter of permission must
be
obtained from the parent or legal guardian to this effect. This letter
must
be in the possession of the teacher accompanying the group, prior to
your
program departure.
3. Students are expected to have all breakfasts and
dinners
with the group, unless special permission has been obtained from me.
4. Participants are not permitted to carry or
purchase knives, firearms, or any other dangerous weapons.
5. Possession of narcotics is not permitted.
Immediate dismissal from the trip is required for anyone violating this
regulation.
6. Students are not permitted to rent a motor
vehicle of any kind.
7. Students are required to be in their assigned
rooms
(i.e. not in rooms of others) by 11:00 p.m. unless the group is away
from
the accommodation on an organized activity with the teacher.
8. There is a general midnight curfew on all ACIS
trips.
Unless there is a scheduled activity running past midnight, you must be
in
your hotel or residence from midnight until the next morning. Respect
the
rest of the other guests by keeping noise to a minimum after 10:00 p.m.
9. You are required to participate in all group
activities
such as sightseeing and excursions -- as these components constitute
the
basic reason for your ACIS trip -- to gain knowledge from the overseas
experience!
10. During free time periods, you are required to
remain
under supervision of your teacher. You should always be in groups of
three
or four when you are not with your teachers. Always be sure we know
where
you are going, with whom, and when you will return. Be certain to
always
carry with you the name, address, and telephone number of your hotel.
Violation of the regulations will result in a
collect telephone call to your parents. Subsequent
violations will result in your being returned home at your parents'
expense.
The nature of a first violation, however, could be serious enough for
you
to be removed from the program and immediately returned home at your
parents'
expense.
In order for the program to operate as smoothly as
possible,
be punctual -- do not keep others waiting. Be supportive of your
teacher
and the staff. We need to have full support of group cohesiveness and
will
enforce discipline so that everyone on the program has the best
possible
experience. Respect other people's property. You will be responsible
for
any damage you might cause.
As a student traveling abroad, you are in a very
important
responsible position. You are representing your family, your
chaperones,
your school, your community, and your country. Your enthusiasm and
willingness
to learn is the key to experience that awaits you.
One of the greatest experiences of your life is
about
to begin!
