Drove from South Jersey for close to 12 hours to get to Moosehorn NWR at around 5:00am on the 4th of July. I was able to enjoy some of the Maine landscape starting at around 4:00am as it got light very early. I saw a number of small lakes but no Moose. When I got to the refuge, I went to the headquarters to get a map and any other information I could find. I noticed a number of hummingbirds feeding on Coral Honeysuckle right next to the main building. I was able to get within 10 feet and took a number of pictures, this one being my favorite. I spent some time at the Woodcock trail unsuccessfully looking for one. I did find a snake (it literally jumped from the rock I was about to place my hand on), Common Yellowthroats, Northern Parula and a Swamp Sparrow. I was hoping to find some more Warblers when I walked into this small Black Bear. I spent the rest of the day walking through some of the many open field looking for wildlife. To sum it all up, I was unable to take many pictures of birds, but I enjoyed my time at the refuge. |
