Upcoming Classes & Seminars

It’s that time again! Registration at Richard Hugo House is now open and I have an exciting new class being offered. It’s The Writers Workout III: Train Your Brain!

Powerful planning leads to real results. By using what sports psychologists call “self-determination-training” (SDT) we’ll learn to optimize your mental focus and produce massive increases in your writing motivation, intention, autonomy and success.

What kind of success? The kind you determine for yourself. The kind you secretly feared you might never have. You’ll know it works because you’ll do it, not just talk about it.

Writer’s block: what’s that? Self-flagellation: say goodbye to it. Jump in and become the writer you’ve always wanted to be.

Parts I and II are not required, just come join the team! Registration is limited.

GLBT Studies class beginning soon at Antioch University Seattle

Although existing across cultures and times, the stories of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people were, until recently, largely ignored, destroyed or suppressed. This course will explore the experiences, history and contributions of LGBT people through the multi-disciplinary lenses of the social sciences, psychology, literature and personal experience. All lively minds are welcome.

The class will be held from 7PM to 9:30PM over a span of ten Wednesday evenings starting Jan. 6th. Registration for the course is open to non-matriculated students until Jan 3rd. For more information about registration at Antioch University Seattle, please visit:

The Mind's Eye- Becoming a Visual Writer (2-day class)

May 16th & May 17th- 1:00-5:00PM Richard Hugo House, Seattle, WA

Every writer has been admonished “show, don’t tell,” so in this workshop we’ll be taking a step-by-step approach to infusing our written work with the essential techniques of visual storytelling. Using the secrets of film masters like Alfred Hitchcock and Sidney Lumet, we’ll develop writing that projects up off the page and onto the deepest parts of our readers’ minds. The workshop will run on May 16th and May 17th from 1-5pm. Richard Hugo House may have some scholarships available. Check with Brian McGuigan for more information. Register at hugohouse.org or call (206) 322-7030.

Righting the Craft: Revising, Rewriting and Bailing Out (2-day class)

Feb 21st and Feb 28th- 1:00-5:00PM Richard Hugo House, Seattle, WA

RHH_LOGO_2006+_400x272Actors rehearse, filmmakers reshoot, and artists paint over, yet all too often writers mis-judge their work by the fragile raft of the first draft. “Writing is rewriting. A writer must learn to deepen characters, trim writing, intensify scenes,” says Richard North Patterson. “To fall in love with the first draft to the point where one cannot change it is to greatly enhance the prospects of never publishing." So before you abandon ship or start rowing in circles, we’ll hoist the sails of exercise and discussion to catch the wind and rewrite the craft. Register at hugohouse.org or call (206) 322-7030.
