Amazing Planets

Research Scenario

Wouldn't it be great to take a trip to the Great Red Spot on Jupiter or visit the rings of Saturn? Imagine the possibilities if we could travel to other planets! In this investigation, you will research one of the planets in our solar system in order to design a virtual tour of the planet and answer the Essential Question:

How is this planet unique in the solar system?

Task & Product

You work with a partner to gather information about one planet's planetary characteristics and other interesting facts. You will use Photo Story software to create a multimedia video in which you present a virtual tour of your planet. Each group's Photo Story video will be linked to an Amazing Planets Virtual Tour website for your Science classmates and others to experience. After "virtually touring" all the planets in the solar system, you and your Science classmates will be able to analyze planetary characteristics in order to compare the composition, size, and physical features of the planets in the solar system.

  • View and listen to a video created by students who researched some amazing places on Earth too see an example of the kind of multimedia project you'll be creating.
  • Discuss the definition and characteristics of multimedia; what kinds of media were included in the this Photo Story video?
Assessments

This scoring tool will be used to evaluate your research and media production process and product.

Essential Question:

How is this planet unique in the solar system?

The following information is required:

  • Size of planet
  • Surface temperature
  • Distance from the Sun
  • Number of moons
  • Atmospheric gases/layers
  • Surface features
  • Period of rotation
  • Period of revolution
  • Number of rings
  • Distinguishing features
  • Terrestrial or Gas Planet?
  • How planet got its name
  • History of the planet's discovery
  • Other interesting facts of your choice
Gather & Sort

A. Use these resources and search tools to locate and gather information about your amazing place. Add websites to FAVORITES for next time!

  1. WorldBook Student or Science Resource Center databases - Do a keyword search for an encyclopedia article about your planet.
    • Login ID's are needed for home access
  2. DESTINY Library Catalog/WebPath Express- do a keyword search for websites & books about your planet
  3. netTrekker - Do a keyword search for websites about your planet
    • Login ID's are needed for home access
  4. Encyclopedias in print- Astronomy encyclopedias available in the computer lab; World Book, the New Book of Knowledge, etc. are available on carts near the study carrels.

B. Save this Inspiration web to your planet folder in your class Group Projects folder on the Students drive. Re-name the file: notes_last name. Open the file.

  1. To record notes, click on the Suptopic box , then click the Note icon on the toolbar
  2. Type in or copy/paste your notes; underneath the notes, type the word SOURCE and hyperlink it to the URL where you got the note.
    • To do this, copy the URL from your Internet browser, highlight the word SOURCE in your note, click on the Hyperlink icon, and paste the URL in the Link to box.
    • You may copy and paste information from the resources to your Inspiration web; however, you may have to paraphrase some of that information later to avoid plagiarism in your video narration.

C. Locate and select freely-licensed digital images to illustrate the information in your notes for each subtopic.

  1. Open your Inspiration Notes file; click the Outline icon.
  2. Revisit the website or database article where you found the information in by clicking on the Source link for the Note; check the source for images from NASA.
  3. Search one of the image sources below:
  4. When you find an Image that illustrates information in a Note, copy the URL:
    • Type the word Image beside your Source link and highlight it.
    • Hyperlink to the URL where you found the image.
  5. Locate a planet photo to group with photos of yourselves on your Introduction slide. Think about how you and your partner might pose to appear as though you are there in space with your planet! Link this photo to the word Image on your Introduction subtopic Note.

D.Work with your partner to analyze your research notes.

  1. Check to be sure that together you have gathered all of the required information on your Inspiration webs. Locate and record any missing information. Make sure you have typed your planet name and your name as the Researcher.
  2. Click the Outline icon to print out your notes in outline form
Organize

A. Organize your information and photos by completing a Story Board for your Photo Story.

  1. BOTH PARTNERS: Open your saved Inspiration Notes from your planet folder on the Students drive. Have out your printouts of your Outline notes.
  2. ONE PARTNER ONLY: Save the Story Board template to your Group Projects planet folder; name the file storyboard_partnerlastname_partnerlastname. Open the file.
  3. Use the information from your Outline printouts to compose your Video Narration for each slide; type your narration in the Notes section. Remember, you will be reading this aloud and recording it for your video. Write good, interesting sentences.
  4. Decide who will narrate each slide and type the narrator's name.
  5. Revisit the Photo links in your Inspiration notes to select a photo for each slide.
    • First, save the image to your Group Projects folder. DO NOT CHANGE THE FILE NAME OF THE PICTURE. Do not save thumbnail photos, as these will appear blurry!
    • Insert the picture onto the slide in your Story Board
    • Copy & paste the URL for each picture onto the slide; you will need to refer back to the webpage to complete a Bibliography entry for each pictures you use.

B. Take digital photos of each other and group these with a photo of your planet, so that it looks as if you and your partner are really out in space!

  1. Select a photo of the planet for your first slide (Introduction)
  2. Examine the planet photo to decide where you want each partner to be located in the picture, and how you should pose to make it appear as though you are really there; then take a digital photo of each or both partners.
  3. Open the planet and partner image files in Microsoft PhotoDraw.
  4. On the partner photo, use the Cut Out > By Drawing feature in Microsoft PhotoDraw to closely crop the bodies of each partner from the background.
  5. When finished the crop, each partner should Save Selection with file format JPEG and filename your name to your Group Work folder.
  6. Copy each partner cut-out photo and paste them onto the planet picture; position the partner cut-outs as desired and then and then Group the partner photos and planet photo together.
  7. Save Selection with file format JPEG and filename both partners names to your Group Work folder.

C. Use your Story Board plan to create your Photo Story.

  1. Import pictures from your Group Work folder.
  2. Add text where appropriate, such as "Welcome to _______" on your introduction slide.
  3. Record narration for each picture; demonstrate fluent reading as you narrate.
  4. Add background music (optional, as appropriate); adjust the music volume so that it does not overpower the narration!
  5. Be sure to click SAVE PROJECT at the end of each class!
Save with filename your place name_photostory.
  6. When completely finished:
    • Click on Save for playback on a computer
    • Browse to your Group Work folder.
    • Name your Photo Story video Virtual Visit to Your Planet.

D. Avoid plagiarism by citing your sources:

  1. Open your Inspiration Outline notes to return to the information and image sources you used.
  2. Complete a Source Card for every source you used:
  3. Use EasyBib.com to format your Bibliography in Microsoft Word. Type both partners' names and the date in the top right-hand corner and Save to your planet folder in Group Projects with file name bib.

E. Refer to the scoring tool to evaluate your finished product.
