The Ballroom Dances

Waltz

Time: 3/4 Tempo: 29 – 31 bars/minute Type: Smooth (American) or Modern (International) Danced around Line of Dance (counter-clockwise)

The Waltz is the easiest of the dances to learn. The correct use of body swing, relaxing and straightening of the knees, in conjuction with proper rises, and controlled use of body sways, all play a part in producing a dance that is continuously flowing with a rhythmic, lilting movement.

The Foxtrot

Time: 4/4 Tempo: 30+ bars/minute Type: Smooth (American) or Modern (International) Danced around Line of Dance (counter-clockwise)

The Foxtrot is characterized by long, gliding, smooth steps. The dance has a lazy, unhurried appearance. This dance is best danced in large, uncrowded areas and is of little use in most social dancing situations.

The Tango

Time: 2/4, both beats accented Tempo: 31 (American) – 33 (International) Type: Smooth (American) or Modern (International) Danced around Line of Dance (counter-clockwise)

The Tango is a very attractive dance known for its staccatto action and fast movements. "Tango Atmosphere" is sought after by the best dancers. The basic figures are very simple yet fascinating.
