The Hold for Waltz, Foxtrot, and Quickstep
The closed ballroom hold requires the maintenance of five points of contact between the partners while they are dancing. These consist of three hand contacts:
(1.) The man's left hand holding the lady's right hand, (2.) the lady's left hand resting on the top of the man's right upper arm (behind the arm in the Tango), (3.) the man's right hand placed on the left shoulder blade on the back of the lady.
In addition to these 3 hand contacts, there are two more areas of contact:
(4.) The lady's left elbow rests on the man's right elbow,
(5.) the right area of the chest of each partner touches that of the other.

Gentleman Notes

The man's Left arm slopes slightly downward from the shoulder. The left elbow is in line with the shoulder. The forarm bends slightly forward from the elbow.
The palm of the left hand faces forward.
The left wrist is not bent.
The Right arm should slope downward from the shoulder as near as possible to that of the left, depending on the height of the lady. The right elbow is farther forward than the left.
The Right hand should be placed below the lady's left shoulder blade.
Care should be taken not to wrap around the lady.
The head is held upright looking over the lady's right shoulder.
The lady is positioned very slightly to the man's right side.

Lady Notes

Raise the Right hand and place it into the gentleman's left hand.
The left arm shall rest very lightly on the man's right arm.
The fingers of the left hand should be placed near the man's right shoulder.

The Hold for Tango

The lady is shifted more to the right. The hold is more compact, with the man's left elbow bending more.
The man's right arm will wrap around the lady and is more towards her waist.
The lady should place her left arm behind the man, just under his right armpit.
