Dancing Terms and Definitions
Alignment - The direction the feet are pointing in relation to the room. Terms used in relation to alignment are: facing, backing and pointing.

Amalgamation - Two or more dance figures grouped together.

Chassé - Three steps, generally moving sidewards, which the feet are closed on the 2nd step.

Contrary Body Movement (CBM) - The action of the body on turning steps

Contrary Body Movement Position (CBMP) - When the leg is placed across the front or back of the body, giving the appearance of CBM, only not turning.

Fallaway Position - Variations where man and lady are moving backwards in promenade position.

Footwork - The manner in which the feet interact with the floor. Heel, Toe-heel, etc.

Line of Dance - Line of progression around the dance floor. Always done counter-clockwise.

Natural Turn - A turn to the right

Reverse Turn - A turn to the left

Poise - Position of the body in relation to the feet

Swivel - A turn on the ball of one foot

Promenade Position - Position where bodies form a "V" shape while maintaining contact with the man's right side and the lady's left side

Pivot - A turn on the ball of one foot. The other foot will remain in front or behind in CBMP.
