We're Riding the
Technology Wave

Karen M. Repine, M.D.

Wavefront, or Custom Cornea Laser Vision Correction is here, and Repine Vision and Laser is thrilled to be able to offer it to patients. Custom Cornea is one of the latest technologies available to patients seeking LASIK (Laser in-situ Keratomileusis) or PRK (Photo- refractive Keratectomy) refractive surgery. You may read more about the differences between LASIK and PRK in the Fall 2002 issue of Repine’s Vision available on Repine Vision’s website at www.repinevision.com.

Why Custom Cornea?
In order to correct or reduce imperfections in the multiple lenses of telescopes, astronomers and physicists pioneered wavefront technology. Now, a tool called the wavefront analyzer can accurately measure the way light travels through the eye. The resulting map of the eye is then programmed into the laser, and the laser treats the eye based upon a personalized 3D map. Custom Cornea helps to treat “higher order” aberrations, which are tiny imperfections in the eye that can have a significant impact on one’s quality of vision. Higher order aberrations cannot be corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or Traditional refractive surgery. Until now, only “lower order aberrations” such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism could be measured and treated. Higher order aberrations (HOAs) may be linked to visual glare and halos.

Is Custom LASIK better than Traditional LASIK?
Custom LASIK will be necessary for some and desired by many people who choose to have refractive surgery. In clinical trials by VISX, Inc. of Santa Clara, CA, 189 patients with mild nearsightedness were treated using a wavefront system. Six months later, 94% of the patients saw 20/20 without glasses, and 74% saw 20/16 or better, according to LaserVision Centers, Inc. Laser Vision continues, “In another clinical trial performed by Alcon, Inc. of Fort Worth, TX, some patients received Traditional LASIK on one eye and Wavefront-guided treatment on the other. Many patients reported that the Wavefront-treated eye had clearer and sharper vision, even though both eyes were 20/20. Potentially, the most important benefit of Custom LASIK is the improvement of nighttime vision and reduction of postoperative flare, glare, and halos as a result of the correction or reduction of HOAs.”
Two lasers, the VISX and Autonomous Ladarwave, are currently approved for the Wavefront Technology and Dr. Repine uses both for Traditional and Wavefront refractive surgery.
