5-May-02 4 Lake Springs Day Use Area, Thurmond Lake GA The shake-down cruise went well.  No problems, just smiles!  I did let go of my (plastic) paddle and it promptly sank to the bottom.  I was able to "swim" the boat by raising and pumping the rudder when there was no wind.  My wide brimmed hat catches on the main sheet hanging below the boom when I tack.  Partly Cloudy & Cool, light and variable winds 0-5mph;  Difficult to exit ramp area bay.  Area is narrow and protected from wind by trees on the shorelines.
19-May-02 4 Fort Gordon Recreation Area, Thurmond Lake GA I have too much sail area for these winds!  I turtled the boat repeatedly.  Must lower the main sail to right the boat in high winds, or the boat just blows over again.  Must remember to tie EVERYTHING down.  Remove shoes and tie those down too.  Sunglasses do not float.  Take off your hat before you tack and hang yourself with it!!! Sunny & Cold, strong winds 15-25mph, whitecaps;  Water is shallow at the peninsulas on the right & left leaving the ramp.
26-May-02 4 Fort Gordon Recreation Area, Thurmond Lake GA I seem to drift sideways when sailing to windward in light air.  When the wind picks up, I am able to make way fine, if the daggerboard stays all the way down.  I made a gadget to keep the board down, so this won't be a problem anymore.  I must make a checklist, as I remembered the PFD's in the Jeep when I was out on the lake. Sunny & Warm, light and variable winds 0-5mph

27-May-02 4 Fort Gordon Recreation Area, Thurmond Lake GA There was nice wind part of the time.  Then it all but stopped so I beached long enough to eat some lunch.  While eating, the wind came back and I was looking forward to going back out again.   When I went back to the boat, the rudder hinge pin had broken from the waves beating the boat against the shore.  I had to sail the last 400 yards to the boat ramp with both hands holding onto the tiller and rudder box to steer.  Sunny & Warm, light and variable winds 0-10mph
1-Jun-02 4 Concord Yacht Club on Fort Loudon Lake in Knoxville, TN.
This was the Spring Fling gathering of the BYYB.  We had 3 Weekenders, 2 Skipjacks, 1 Minicup and a Sharpie in attendance.  There were 2 races held and one round of Broadsides played.  My Minicup performed great and placed first in all three events! Sunny & Warm, light and variable winds 0-10mph
7-Jun-02 4 Fort Gordon Recreation Area, Thurmond Lake GA This was the best day of sailing so far!  The winds were constant, and at the peak of what I can handle.  Today was some very fast sailing!  There were whitecaps on the lake, and it was pretty choppy, but I didn't capsize!  I had some problems with motorboat and jet ski traffic, but other than that, it was a perfect day of sailing. Nothing broke, and there were no mishaps.  I felt like a sailor! Sunny & Warm, west winds 10-15mph

6-Jul-02 4 Fort Gordon Recreation Area, Thurmond Lake GA There was a beach party at the lake today, with music, games, food, beer, lots of prizes being given away, and lots of fun in the sun!   The sailing was great too!  The winds were fairly stiff and steady, and I today I had passengers aboard, Daniel's friends Christopher and Travis each took turns going sailing with me.  They were good ballast! Sunny & Hot, light and variable winds 0-10mph
11-Oct-02 2 Lake Sidney Lanier, GA This was the Southeastern Fleet gathering and commissioning.  We had to use a boat ramp that is about two miles from our campsites.  Mike Cagel from Mississipi and I helped each other rig, launch, and get the tow vehicles and trailers back to the campgrounds.  It was a nice little sail, but not enough wind! Sunny, warm, light winds
12-Oct-02 2 Lake Sidney Lanier, GA We had some visitors come by to look at our fleet's boats.  I took Jackson Fisher out on the water with me for an hour of sailing.  We could move around, but the winds were very light.  Then I took my wife out for her first time sailing.  She would have had a better time with more wind too... Sunny, warm, light winds
13-Oct-02 2 Lake Sidney Lanier, GA Daniel and I went out for a couple of hours.  This was his first sail, and he got to be captain for quite awhile.  We sailed to the boat ramp and then paddled back to the campgrounds when the wind died out.  Later in the day the wind really started picking up, but we were not able to get more sailing in.  The winds were too strong for us to get out of the cove.  The jib sheet shakel fastened itself to the fore stay and then the tiller broke.  We had to limp back to shore and call it a day. Sunny, warm, variable winds, 0-15mph

23-Aug-03 3 Lake Norman, NC This was the first time I went sailing this year.  We drove up north to North Carolina's Lake Norman to meet with the BYYB Southeastern Fleet again.  Angie was there with her Weekender, and Richard Norman and his wife Mary were there with their Weekender.  The sailing was fun, but pretty un-eventful this day, as there was almost no breeze at all.  We floated around on the lake for about 3 hours trying to get from the boat ramp to the campgrounds.  As it was getting dark, Richard finally started up his little outboard motor and towed me the rest of the way to the cove we called home that night.  It was fun to be on the water again! Sunny, warm, light shifting breezes, 0-3mph.  Lake Norman has many narrow branchs of water ways that require lots of tacking.  The tree lined shores insure the wind changes directions constantly!  Pretty challenging to sail, and lots of powered traffic.
24-Aug-03 2.5 Lake Norman, NC I spent a couple of hours sailing from the campgrounds back to the boat ramp.  There was considerably more wind today than yesterday, and I was able to at least keep moving.  I was not able to keep up with Richard and Angie in their Weekenders  but this was more due to the shifting winds and powerboat traffic and bad luck than anything else.  I managed to capsize at the dock too!  I very skillfully eased the boat on a run right up to the dock, turned into the wind and stopped 3 feet from the dock, grinning and waving the whole time!  Then before I could douse the sails, a gust of wind started blowing me towards Richard's Weekender.  I moved the the crash side of my boat to put a hand out so I wouldn't bump into anything.  At the same time I moved to the lea side of the boat, tipping it, more wind, a few big power boat waves, and that was it!! I capsized and nearly clobbered Richard's Weekender with my mast!  No harm done to the boats, but I did get to go swimming!  Sunny, warm, light shifting breezes, 5-10mph.  Lake Norman has many narrow branchs of water ways that require lots of tacking.  The tree lined shores insure the wind changes directions constantly!  Pretty challenging to sail, and lots of powered traffic.
