Leadville, Colorado

Leadville, Colorado (elevation 10,500 feet) is the highest populated city in the United States.  In its early days, Leadville was a wild mining town where men came to search for silver, gold and lead.  As you can see from the pictures below, the remains of many old mines still dot the landscape near Leadville.  The Climax Mine - a modern Molybdenum mine - is still operational on the outskirts of Leadville.  Climax Mine is located between Leadville and the town of Climax, Colorado (elevation: 11,300 feet).  The Colorado Southern Railroad takes tourists on a nostalgic trip into the mountains near Leadville.
