HPS Campaign Corinth

Robert Frost's Modified PDT File

Some Corinth players feel the game engine does not give artillery a strong enough fire factor at cannister ranges making them easy prey to melee attacks. Robert Frost has developed a new Fire Effectiveness Chart for the PDT file to address this issue until such time as the game designers make changes to the game engine. Below is Robert Frost's comments on his modifications to the PDT file, instructions on how to use it and a link to download the file.

Robert Frost's Comments

This table is based upon the following premise:  1 Napoleon at 1 hex range firing canister has the same effectiveness as 300 men firing rifles at the same distance. This is a Fire Value of 1200. Each gun in the Corinth system fires as though it were 50 infantry. "Effectiveness" refers to expected casualties. This factor is divided by 14 (the Napoleon 1 hex factor in the Corinth PDT). The resulting ratio is applied to all other artillery types equally.

The following suppositions are made:

Hexes 1-3 are canister range.

Hex 4 is reaching maximum canister range, although case shot would be fairly effective since short fuses would be employed. This range is approximately 2/3 of the ratio employed in hexes 1-3.

Hexes 5-N are considered artillery-vs-artillery. They are approximately half that of the Corinth PDT. Battery/counterbattery fire is excessive in terms of gun losses under the existing Corinth system. The changes made will redress this situation at the expense of lower infantry losses for those distances. Unless HPS uncouples artillery and infantry fire, there is no other option.

Small arms factors are unchanged.

Instructions

First for those of you not familar with how the Corinth System works, when you create a scn file you point to a map, pdt and oob file. This is saved in the scn file along with the info giving the location and condition of all units. Then when a new game is started the scn file opens the correct files and loads all the data for the game. When the game is saved the condition and location of the units is saved and the NAME of the pdt, map and oob files are also saved. You can have blind scenarios because once the file is saved you no longer need the scn file, the unit info is saved in the bte or btl file but the map, oob and pdt data is not. These files must be in the main folder or you can't reopen the file. Also you cannot change the order of the units in the oob or the maximum size of the units or the file may not load. You can however change the picture ID's in an oob without causing a crash and you can change the values inside the .pdt file such as the Fire Efectiveness Chart, this is what Robert did. The file below is a modified Fire Effectiveness Chart that he created to give better close range artillery results. You have to paste it into the pdt file over the old one. It's fairly easy to do, all you need is a text editor, Notepad works fine and is available on every pc I've seen.

Download the CorinthNew zipfile below, unzip the CorinthNew.pdt to any convenient folder. I would suggest you create a folder called oldpdt and copy the original .pdt files there. Then open the CorinthNew.pdt with Notepad or any text editor you're familar with and highlight from the line

A 1 8 2 5 3 1.5 4 .5 -1

to the

$

right click your mouse and click on Copy, then go to File, Open and find the pdt file you want to modify. Double click to open it and find the same lines in there, highlight them, right click with the mouse, click on paste and you should have pasted the new factors over it. Click on File, Save and you now have a pdt file with the modified factors in it.

For Ozark, Franklin or Gettysburg you can paste these values in, however be aware there are additional weapons in these pdt files that Robert did not modify. His file ends with the p weapon so I would suggest you copy from the A to the end of the p line and paste over the same part of the old file. This will leave the remaining weapons as they were and they will use the original values.

The only problem is any current game you are playing that uses that pdt file will be using the modified chart. If your opponent does not change his at the same time you will be using two different charts and will see different results in fire combat depending on who is doing the file. If only one person is using it his offensive fire will be more effective and his opponents defensive fire will be increased. So you both must agree to do this and do it at the same time.

Another way of doing it is to modify the scn file. If you open it with your text editor you'll see the pdt file name listed. If you modify the name of the pdt, say from Corinth.pdt to Corinth_2.pdt and create a modified pdt with that name then any NEW game you start with that scn will use the new pdt while games already started will continue to use the old one.

I hope I've explained it, I'm no expert myself and I've tried to simplify it the best I could for those of you who aren't computer savvy. If you don't understand it or have problems just contact me and I'll be glad to use any suggestions you may have to improve the explanation.
