Exhaust Upgrade NOTE: The Magnaflow Catback Exhaust System was installed at 15,250 miles. Noted increase in fuel economy was 2.5mpg after installation. The system has a lifetime warranty from Magnaflow. (9/23/2009)
Magnaflow created a bolt on exhaust system that fits right up to the stock catalytic converter. The installation was easy as all the mounting points lined right up the first time. All shinny and new, the system was sent well packed in a white box. Notice too that the pipes are all mandrel bent and along with the muffler is a large resonator. All the piping is 2.25" in diameter, which is a one size fits all for the Eclipse. The stock GT and GTS come with slightly larger pipes from the factory so I am curious where any gains would come from with this swap. Few aftermarket exhaust systems pull any more horsepower out of the Eclipse than the stock pipes. The Magnaflow Cat-back Exhaust boasted a "10.1hp & 17.4 ft-lb" gain despite it's being smaller in diameter for the GT and GTS. Installation was a breeze as all the hangers lined up and the new exhaust pipes fit perfectly in the stock grooves. The mandrel bends were well planned. The resonator was huge, so while the new exhaust gains a nice meaty growl, it didn't make the car too much louder overall. The new Magnaflow muffler is quite a bit more polished than the stocker. The new exhaust tip is a bit bigger than I would have liked, but I don't mind as long as the tone is right and the power gains are there. After driving on the exhaust for a while, the sound mellowed out and gets richer. I like the sound of it now as I drive down the road. Not loud, just a nice mellow tone. I didn't get a Dyno test of before and after, but it feels and sounds good enough to make me happy with the purchase.
