Whether you are a former student or simply an ardent fan of Jon Hassler’s great novels and stories set here in Minnesota , you won’t want to miss this event to take place at Jon Hassler’s Boyhood Home in his hometown 

of Plainview , MN (known to you as Plum in his autobiographical novel Grand Opening).  Jon and Gretchen will join in the activities and stay overnight in this lovely little bungalow which was moved to 5th and Broadway and renovated to save it from the wrecking ball.  It is the new home of the Rural America Writers’ Center.

 

When:                          Saturday, July 31 –  Sunday, August 1, 2004

 

Where:                         Plainview Minnesota

 

Schedule of Events:       Saturday, July 31

    2-4 p.m.   Reading of Jon’s script:  Four Miles to Pinecone in the Jon Hassler

        Theater.

    4:30 – 6:30 p.m.   Supper on the lawn of the boyhood home.  (In case of rain, 

        we will move into the lobby of the theater next door.)

    7:00 – 8:30   A walking tour and readings at sites that figure into Jon’s 

        canon of  work.

    9:00 – Music and dessert at the boyhood home. Toasts and anecdotes from

         former Hassler students.

 

Sunday, August 1st

    8:30 – 10:30   Continental breakfast at the boyhood home. 

 

Cost:                $25 per person 18 or older, $15 under 18.  Call 507-534-2900 or 

                        612-824-4935 for reservations.

 

Proceeds from the event will help cover the cost of putting a sign on the house or lawn.

Any additional money will help defray the cost of phone and internet service at the 

house which will be used for housing writers in residence or theater personnel during productions.

 

Housing:  Camping: Plainview is 4 miles from Carley State Park , and 20 miles from the 

Bluff Valley Campground in Zumbro Falls .  Hotels:  The AmericInn or Anderson House 

in Wabasha, the Plainview Hotel, and numerous hotels in Rochester are within easy driving distance.

 

P.S.  Used Book Sale:  The Writers’ Center is collecting books for its used book sale 

to be held August 21-22 (Corn Days).  Please donate your used books and then check 

out the sale!
