An assortment of bench knives -- The knives at the top of the photo are chip carving knives. Those at the bottom right were made from a set of 4 ebony handled steak knives, and three of them are sharpened on one side only, much like a chisel. A Swedish Sloyd laminated steel knife and another which was made from a kitchen knife are my most used bench knives.
I made a couple of scraping blades which get a lot of use. One was made from a thick putty knife, the other from a well worn plane iron to which I have epoxied rosewood to form a handle.
My general purpose bench gouges are Marples with boxwood handles, five in-cannel (bevel inside) and five out-cannel (bevel outside), and also some German spoon shaped gouges.
Some carving tools in protective cloth rolls -- The canvas rolls were made by my wife and contain a variety of carving tools, mostly Marples, but also a few Swiss made tools with octagonal handles. Although I haven't done much carving, I would like to do more. I was recently offered a set of 22 unused Austrian made Stubai carving gouges for $8 apiece and I jumped at the opportunity.
I also have a few older large carving gouges. The ones on the left are in-cannel gouges.
Wood threading Kits -- The 3/4" set and 1" set were both purchased from Woodcraft Supply. This antique 3/4" screw box and tap were in an old tool box that was given to me.
I located this old leather workers cutting gauge recently. The rosewood and bronze handle shows wear from many years of use, probably cutting leather harness straps. I don't know what I am going to do with it, but it sure is fun to look at.
The cooper's adze was used to shape the chime (bevel) on the inside edge of a cask or barrel before using a topping plane to finish the edge. The other end was used to drive the steel hoops over the staves.
A couple of old hatchets -- The Kent pattern side hatchet (similar to a hewing axe) has a bevel on one side only. It is marked OVB (Our Very Best) with the initials of the supplier below (Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co.). The old roofing hatchet is not marked.
