After I retired I built a detached workshop in my back yard. My previous shop had been in my basement and I wanted to get the sawdust out of the house. Another benefit was not having to climb the stairs from my basement every day and my old knees are pretty happy about that.
A workshop is as much a place to spend time as it is a place to make things. And although she has never said so, I believe my wife is grateful that I am not hanging around the house all day. There is a wireless intercom in the shop and she can call me to dinner without having to leave the kitchen.
