- Maurits Cornelis Escher was born on June 17th, 1898 in Leeuwarden, Holland.
- M.C. Escher's parents were George and Sarah Escher, and they called him Mauk. He was the youngest of four sons, his father was a civil engineer, and his mother was the daughter of a government minister.
- Escher is often known for his mathematically inspired woodcuts, lithographs, and mezzotints which feature impossible constructions, bizarre optical and conceptual effects, explorations of infinity, and tessellations. He played with architecture and perspective.
- In 1960 Escher published his first book called Grafiek en Tekeningen in which he described 76 of his works.
- During his lifetime, Escher made 448 lithographs, woodcuts and wood engravings and over 2,000 drawings and sketches.
- M.C. Escher died on March 27, 1972 in Hilversum, a town in North Holland.
