| Overview of the KUNSTMAN - KUNSMAN Family History: |
| The KUNSTMAN name has many variations, the most popular being KUNSMAN and others are KUNSTMANN, COONSMAN, KUHNSMAN, CONESMAN, KUNZMAN, CUHNSMAN. I have used the KUNSTMAN spelling as the default spelling of the family name because my ancestors William and his daughter Eliza both used this spelling of the name. It also appears that August Heinrich, the immigrant ancestor of the family used the spelling KUNSTMAN which is evident from his steady and flowing signature on the passenger list of the ship Hope, which arrived in Philadelphia on the 23rd of September 1734. The name, if translated literally, from German, means “art man” or “artistic man” or also “skill man”. In Middle High German the term ‘kunst’ meant ‘knowledge’, supporting the literal translation of one who possessed a certain knowledge or skill. My ancestor William Kunstman, was himself a skillful man, a photographer, painter, and craftsman, perhaps there is no coincidence that he perpetuated the KUNSTMAN spelling. According to early family sources the family originated in the Alsace-Lorraine region, currently belonging to France, however, traditionally and historically inhabited by German speaking people. There is no doubt the Kunstman’s spoke German as they continued to use the language in the new world and adapted the Pennsylvania German language. August Heinrich Kunstman arrived in Philadelphia and settled in south eastern Pennsylvania. |
