Black Moshannon State Park
|
With only 76 campsites, Black Moshannon is one of the smaller Pennsylvania state park campgrounds we've visited. Our site, #56, was a pull-through site with an electric hook-up. The site was nice and we had plenty of room but it was located a bit too close to the road, for our liking. Most of the sites in that section (sites #52 through #70) were pretty nice and within a reasonable distance of the bath house. If you aren't too concerned with the distance to a bath house, there are some large, secluded sites near the entrance of the campground.
The bath house in our loop was clean and well-maintained. There was a dishwashing station behind the bath house. There was a campstore/refreshment stand within walking distance of our campsite. They carry ice, firewood, basic groceries, camping supplies and souvenirs. They also had some great ice cream; don't miss that. Be sure to keep an eye on your gas guage. The closest gas station we found was about 9 miles away in Philipsburg. You can also find a supermarket in Philipsburg.
Within the park there are plenty of outdoor activities. Black Moshannon Lake covers about 250 acres and includes a sandy beach area for swimming. Boat rentals are available in season. There are also 16 miles of trails to explore. We particularly enjoyed the Bog Trail. It features a raised boardwalk path through the bog and offers a really nice, self-guided tour of the wetlands.

As is our usual custom, we went to a local minor league baseball game. This time it was the State College Spikes at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. We had a great time there; it's definitely worth a trip into State College.
Black Moshannon State Park is definitely on our list of campgrounds to visit again.
