The LaBarge Family Camping Adventures

Codorus State Park
Hanover, Pennsylvania
October 2002

Cordorus State Park had been on our list of campgrounds to check out for quite some time. We never seemed to get around to staying there. That is, until this year. We decided to do a little late-fall camping a Codorus.

The campsites at Codorus vary in size and setting. Loops A through C are mostly wooded, while loop D is mostly grassy open sites.

We picked a site in the "B" loop (Site #77) with a 30-amp electric hookup. The site was large and wooded. One side of the paved area had a fairly steep drop off down to the picnic table and fire ring. This wouldn't be a great site if you have small children.  On the plus side, the site was fairly secluded, which we like.

We found the bathhouse in Loop B to be clean and well-heated. When reserving a site, check the map carefully. Some sites are a considerable distance away from the nearest bathhouse.

Favorite Sites

Here are some that looked good to us:

  • Sites with no hookups: 2, 21, 31, 33, 107, 108, 109, 113, 138
  • Electric hookup: 50, 57, 58, 62*, 65, 71, 72, and 73
* We really liked this site.

Codorus is fairly large at about 3,326 acres. The Park features a swimming pool, a large marina, and about 5 miles worth of hiking trails. In addition to the marina, there are seven boat launches around the lake. The Park also offers boat rentals, in season.

We were looking forward to doing a little fishing in Lake Marburg. Lake Marburg covers a whopping 1,275 acres and 26 miles of shoreline in a particularly scenic setting. However, due to severe drought conditions and the annual draw-down of water for the local paper mill, water levels were 15 feet or so below normal. We passed on the fishing but took the opportunity to explore some sections of the lake that are normally underwater. (Lake Marburg is named for the village of Marburg that was flooded when the lake was created.)

The weather could have been better during our stay. It started to rain as we were setting up and most of the weekend was dreary. However, we enjoyed exploring the Park and the surrounding area. We'll probably make a trip back there in 2003. Hopefully, the weather will be better and Lake Marburg will be back to normal next time.
