The LaBarge Family Camping Adventures

Keen Lake Campground
Waymart, PA
May 2002

My wife and I enjoy visiting minor league baseball parks when we travel. My wife (a die-hard Phillies fan) and I have always wanted to catch a Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons game. The Red Barons, the Phillies' Class AAA affiliate, play in the scenic Lackawanna County Stadium in Moosic. We had been to the stadium for other events but never for a baseball game. We were anxious to get a look at some of the Phillies' hot prospects in action, so we decided to seek out a nearby campground and make a weekend of it.

Searching through some brochures, we came across Keen Lake Campground in Waymart, PA. Keen Lake, located about 20 miles north of Lackawanna County Stadium, had received high ratings from Woodall's so we decided to give it a try. When we called to make reservations, we found the office staff at Keen Lake to be extremely friendly and helpful. In fact, a follow-up email met with the same type of prompt and courteous response. I'd have to give Keen Lake high marks for customer service.

On arrival, we were met with the same friendliness. We had requested a wooded site with water/electric and we assigned to Site #66. We were told that if that site wasn't satisfactory, we could pick out another one. We decided to go with Site #66. Since it was early in the season, our section of the campground was very sparsely populated. This gave us the kind of seclusion we like. The site was not huge but it accommodated our pop-up with plenty of room to spare. Other sites near ours were fairly small, so the office must have given us the best site in that area.

In general, the sites at Keen Lake are on the small side. There are about 300 campsites scattered across 90 acres; many sites are available with water/electric or full hookups. Many of the sites offer cable TV hookups as well. There are also a few secluded tent sites available.

Favorite Sites

Here are some that looked good to us:

  • 47 (W/E/S) and 66 (W/E)
  • Lakefront Sites: 16 through 25 (small sites, but very scenic - all with W/E hookups)

The bathhouse nearest our site appeared to be recently constructed. It was large, well-heated, and spotlessly clean. The showers were coin operated; 25 cents gets you 5 minutes worth.

There's plenty to do at Keen Lake. The lake, itself, is very picturesque. We planned to do some fishing but passed on that due to the wind and chilly temperatures that weekend. Fishing licenses are available at the campground office and boats and canoes are available for rent. There are also several playgrounds for the kids and a large activity field for softball, shuffleboard, and the like. Keen Lake received a 5-star rating from Woodall's for their activities.

We took advantage of the special Mother's Day breakfast on Sunday. Moms were free; others paid only $4.50 for a great pancakes and sausage breakfast. It was nice to meet some of the other campers there. Many of them were long-time visitors to Keen Lake.

While we were packing up to leave, a little girl came onto the campsite carrying a gift. She informed my wife that she won a door prize at the Mother's Day breakfast. She won a set of wind chimes that will hang proudly from the camper on our next trip.
