The LaBarge Family Camping Adventures

Mountain Vista Campground
East Stroudsburg, PA
October 2001

We recently spent a weekend in the Pocono Mountains visiting our daughter who attends at East Stroudsburg University. It was family weekend and near the peak of the Fall foliage so we thought we'd make a camping trip out of it. So, we dug out some brochures and campground guidebooks and proceeded to seek out a campground in the area.

We found Mountain Vista Campground in Pennsylvania Campground Owners Association guidebook. I have to admit, Mountain Vista wasn't our first choice. We tried to make reservations at one or two other campgrounds but they were full. When we called Mountain Vista, however, they had no problem accomodating us. I'm always a little leary about private campgrounds, especially going in sight unseen. I always have this fear of our little pop-up getting sandwiched into some tiny, treeless site, in between two huge Winnebagos. With Mountain Vista, however, my fears were completely unwarranted.

Favorite Sites

Here are some that looked good to us:

  • B7, B8, B9, B10, B11, A57, A58, D23, D22

All of the above sites have electric and water hookups.

Mountain Vista Campground is situated in a beautifully wooded setting on the side of a hill. Despite the sloping terrain, the sites are level and well-maintained. The campground offers sites with amenities ranging from tent sites with no hookups to sites with water, electric, and sewer hookups. We chose a site with electric and water hookups. It was large enough for the pop-up and our tow vehicle with plenty of room to spare. Even during the peak of the Fall foliage, we had empty sites on both sides of us for the whole weekend.

Our site was a short hike (although up a fairly steep trail) to the bathhouse. The facilities were clean and well-maintained with new, modern fixtures throughout. According to a sign on the door, the bathhouse is cleaned twice each day.

There is a small campstore co-located with the camp office. The campstore appeared to be stocked with a few essentials and emergency items. No problem, though; there is a shopping just a few miles from the campground. The campground staff were very friendly and helpful. They mapped out a backroads route between the campground and the University for us so that we could avoid the traffic.

On site recreation includes swimming pool, stocked fishing pond, tennis court, sand volleyball court, game room, table tennis, shuffleboard, bocce court, horseshoe pits, badminton, basketball, playground, planned activities and entertainment.

The Pocono Mountains are filled with things to do. Some of the attractions near the campground include:

We were pleasantly surprised with Mountain Vista Campground and thoroughly enjoyed our weekend there. The campground was quiet and the Fall colors were amazing. We're already planning another trip to Mountain Vista in the Spring.
