Wake Forest Football Playing Fields History

Forest history, is enshrined in the Wake Forest University Hall
of Fame, the Chicago Bears Hall of Fame, and the NFL Hall of Fame in

In 1922, the Demon Deacons began playing football in the new Gore Athletic
Field stadium, which was located on the original campus in Wake Forest, North Carolina. Color added by Deacon Deaton.

Photograph of the old campus taken by Lawson Deaton in 2002. The
campus was sold to the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary when
the college moved to Winston-Salem in 1956.
The
following four photographs were taken by Wake Forest student Lewis Beal
(Class of 1951):
On October 9, 1948 on the old campus, Wake
Forest (probably off the toe of All American Bill George) kicks off in Groves Stadium, which opened in 1940, to
number two ranked UNC. The Tar Heels of Charlie "Choo Choo" Justice edged the Deacs,
28-6.

The Wake Forest College Demon Deacon Band undoubtedly played the Wake Forest Fight Song early and often during the game against N. C. State College in "old" Groves Stadium, October 30, 1948.
