The Arthurian Tarot Deck

For as long as I can remember I have been fascinated by the ability of other individuals who practiced the art of divination.  I thought how incredible it must be to have the ability to foretell the future by gazing into a crystal ball, reading tea leaves, tossing bones and reading the tarot.  In studying divination I have found that many individuals have or can acquire this gift with proper training and insight.  That's right, even you!  It will of course (as all mysteries do) require a great deal of study, time and effort on your part.  But if you truly strive towards this goal, it is most assuredly attainable.  I can not profess to have the ability to provide you with such training here.  I would simply like to share with you some information about the tarot deck that I personally use.  Perhaps by taking a look at the actual cards and their meanings, the tarot will become more appealing to you and a bit less foreboding.  Even if your goal is to learn about the tarot for personal use only, you will be amazed by what it can teach you about yourself.  I have included short definitions and commentary regarding each card.  This is how I see and read the cards.  Others may see their symbolisms and meanings a bit differently.  It's all a matter of your training and preferences.

The cards in this deck were created and illustrated by Anna-Marie Ferguson.  As you will see, they are quite strikingly beautiful.  I hope that you enjoy them as much as I do.

The Major Arcana

The very first card of the Major Arcana is The Fool.  The Fool is, as you can imagine, the light hearted part of ourselves who looks to the future or towards a goal with great optimism and excitement.  He is the day dreamer that is within all of us, the inner child filled with wonder and incredible imagination.  Drawing this card may indicate that you have come to a turning point in your life that will assist you in establishing new goals for yourself, broadening your horizons, or taking the plunge towards developing that new idea that's been rattling around in your head.  But remember, envisioning a dream and attaining it are two different things.  This card warns you that you must be diligent in your quest.  Work hard, be attentive, and realize that there are sacrifices and struggles that must be overcome in order to attain your desired objective.  In other words, don't be FOOLish.  ;-)

Ah yes, The Magician, he is all things that kindle our imagination, mysterious, ageless and timeless.  He is our connection with the unseen forces that flow through us, whether we believe in them or not.  He is the champion and protector of our Mother Earth and counsels us to respect and nurture our environment.  He is Merlin, guardian of the Sacred Spring.  His powers come from understanding and respecting the nature of all living things, rather than from their domination.  Awareness, wisdom, and grace are attributes that we all must strive to achieve.  Drawing this card can indicate that you are being called upon to lead, inspiring others to follow.  You must exhibit strength of will and confidence in order to complete the task at hand.  The Magick is within you!
The Priestess, ruled by the Moon, is a subtle but powerful connection with the collective unconscious or world soul.  Nimue is one of the Priestesses of Avalon, envoy of the Goddess and bearer of ancient wisdom.  She is a skilled healer with astute psychic abilities.  The Priestess represents an inspired state of being and the feminine principles of all life.  Hers is a soul that is continuously seeking knowledge and growth.  Drawing this card can indicate that you are searching for wholeness and enlightenment in your life.  Meditation will bring new solutions to light.
Beauty, intelligence, and spiritual strength are qualities of The Empress that can be found in us all.  She represents motherhood and fertility, peace and harmony, progress and prosperity.  Lady Guenevere, High Queen of Camelot, is responsible for the welfare of both her people and the land, a position that demands maturity, wisdom, and self-sacrifice.  In contrast to the Priestess who sits outside, Guenevere sits inside a great hall; she reigns in the world of people and politics.  Drawing this card may indicate a prosperous business venture or perhaps even a new baby on the way :-)
Hail King Arthur, a man of distinction who rules his kingdom with wisdom, compassion, truth and strength. He is an ambitious and courageous man who is loved by his people as he exhibits great understanding and fair play.  Drawing this card can indicate that you or someone close to you will be faced with great responsibility or a challenge.  You or that person will rise up to meet the challenge by making a decision that will promote peace and harmony and a stable, protective environment.  Don't be afraid to take that leap, you have good judgement on your side.
Is there someone in your life that you look to for guidance, a person with otherworldly knowledge who is willing to share this information with you?  The Hierophant symbolizes just such a person, one that is a kind and generous mentor who nurtures a profound spiritual awareness.  Seek guidance from them, as they will help you to explore and sort out the questions that you may have regarding your spirituality and religious beliefs.  They will help you to grow and understand.  Don't be afraid to ask for help, this person will be there for you.  Trust in them and trust in yourself to make the right choices.
Love is the greatest mystery of all, is it not?  Love is a concept, a feeling, and an emotion that we all seek throughout the entirety of our lives.  This card symbolizes a balanced and valuable relationship, not just with another human being, but also a deeper connection with the divine.  Love is an equal partnership made by choice of your own free will.  It can bring the greatest of happiness and fulfillment to your life.  But remember to take care when involved in a deep, spiritual relationship.  You do not want to lose your sense of self, your own identity and independence by collapsing all of your energy into that other person or belief system.  A secure love is one of equal partnership, trust and respect.
A conflict of some sort may be on the horizon.  Will you be ready to meet the challenge?  Leadership and conviction is called for here in order to avert a potentially difficult situation.  Rise up to the challenge, remain focused and keep your emotions in check.  You will overcome these obstacles through perseverance and strength of will.
The Maid aspect of the Goddess rides the lion.  Her unjaded enthusiasm and love for life has won the lion's confidence, providing her with strength and courage.  The Crone rides atop the serpent, a symbol of the strength that wisdom brings through the Crone's lifelong experience.  Drawing this card can indicate a need for strength of conviction in order to realize one's goals.  Intelligence and reason united with enthusiasm and energy will assist you in the process.
Have you ever felt the need to be alone in order to center yourself and examine your life and true feelings?  This may be one of those times.  Drawing The Hermit indicates a need for solitude, a time to care for and nurture your soul.  Take the time to reflect on your life.  Pay close attention to your dreams and what they may symbolize.  This is a time of self-healing.  The answers to your deepest questions can be found within.  Give yourself the space and the time to find them.  We can not give to others that which we can not find within ourselves.
Do you believe in Karma?  If you do, then you know that the seeds of life that you have planted in the past will come to fruition in the future.  Have you planted the proper seeds and nurtured them in a positive way?  If so, you may be headed for a fortuitous change of fortune, an arising chance for growth and development.  You must however, recognize that this may be only a fleeting opportunity that you must act upon now, as it may disappear with the inevitable turn of the Wheel of Fortune.  Go for it!
The Lady of the Lake symbolizes karma and destiny.  She appears to King Arthur to remind him that there is a higher court that he must abide by, higher than the king's form of justice.  Justice is swift and exacting when it comes to life choices.  Drawing this card indicates the need for total honesty in making decisions that will affect you and those around you.  You must be able to see both sides of a situation and weigh the consequences of the choices that you make.  Truth and honesty will bring you your just reward.
The Hanged Man symbolizes the endurance of self-sacrifice as a part of initiation.  This is a time to examine old habits and outmoded thought patterns.  Recent trials and tribulations have provided you with greater experience and knowledge that you can now draw from to change yourself and your life for the better.  You may feel weak and discouraged now, but you will have actually become more attuned to your own psychic abilities and intuition through this suspension of plans.  Be still and wait on the will of the universe to guide you.
Many people often fear drawing the Death card.  In most cases this fear is totally unfounded as death symbolizes but another turn of the wheel, the natural course of events.  We must have death in order to experience rebirth.  Drawing this card may indicate an end of one way of life and a new beginning of another.  You may need to separate yourself from past experiences or old outmoded ways of thinking in order to start on a path of renewal.  Examine your current situation, is it time for a change?  As Sheryl Crow says in her song, "I think a change will do you good."
The cauldron filled with water from the sacred spring has symbolized magic, prophesy, birth and inspiration.  It is the symbol of the womb of the Goddess.  It speaks to the art of achieving a spiritual balance between this world and the mundane.  This card also illustrates the need for temperance, the balance between passion and reason that will guard you against making decisions that are extreme.  Moderation, patience and diplomacy are called for when you draw this card.
Cernunnos, The Horned God, symbolizes the animal nature in each of us.  This card warns us against allowing our animal instincts to preside over what we know is good and righteous in times of inner struggle or unhealthy situations.  How we handle and resolve the problem determines the positive or negative interpretation of the card.  When handled properly, the energy that the situation brings can serve to empower and motivate us.  If however, this instinctive nature is allowed to reign carelessly, our behavior becomes reckless and often self-destructive.  In the latter situation, drawing this card can indicate violence, abusive relationships and drug abuse.
Drawing The Tower can be a bit frightening if we refuse to heed the warning that it brings.  This card indicates that a change is necessary and imminent.  It is up to us as to how we decide to proceed with the knowledge and information that has been revealed.  We can either face our fears, making changes ourselves that will lead us onto a path of revelation and enlightenment; or we can ignore the call and be faced with the consequence of change that the universe dictates.  Plan B often turns out to be a bit more harsh than Plan  A.  It's up to you.
Have you ever wished upon a star?  Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight, I wish I may, I wish I might, have the wish I wish tonight!  The Star represents a good omen, a time of change for the better, a time to recognize your strengths and natural abilities and use them to secure a bright future.  Believe in yourself and what you are capable of accomplishing.  The Star heralds the promise of a new era.
Have we not all felt the wonder and mystery of a full moon as we gazed up at the glow on a warm summer night?  The moon represents the subconscious, illuminating the hidden realms of the mind.  It stimulates our intuition and our imagination.  Drawing this card can indicate a period of emotionally charged dreams that can greatly effect our waking lives.  Heed these dreams, yet take care to interpret them wisely.  Let your intuition be your guide.
Lleu, the High Celtic God of the Sun, is the harbinger of joy and light, peace and harmony.  You can't go wrong with any of that now can you?  Drawing this card can indicate a multitude of good things, good health, friendship, safety and security.  Bask in the warmth of the sun's rays as you look over your achievements and realize that your plans have finally come to fruition.  The time of the harvest has come.  You can now reap the rewards of your hard work and efforts.  This card can also represent a blessed union or happy marriage.
Do you believe in destiny?  Or is life simply the culmination of our past actions?  The Judgement card calls for an awakening of the spiritual self.  It calls you to look deep within yourself to reexamine your old ideas and perceptions.  Do they still ring true after all that you have learned and experienced?  This can be a time of deep personal transformation, a time to accept responsibilities and understand how your actions effect not only you, but those around you as well.  Drawing this card can indicate achievement, promotion and reward, or possibly a favorable judgement in a legal matter.
Have you ever felt the ecstasy that comes from deep within that connects you to all of life, past, present and future?  Then perhaps you have danced the giants' dance while gazing up at the stars on a moonlit night.  Perhaps you have connected with the collective unconscious of The Universe.  This card symbolizes the journey that we all must take in order to reach our personal goals and the triumph that is attained upon completion of that journey.  The knowledge and understanding that is gained can be a deep and lasting gift of faith.  Drawing this card can indicate a time of confidence, success and lasting happiness.  So mote it be.
