Tools of the Craft
~
Let's begin with something relatively simple that most witches generally agree upon (which is a wonder in itself :).  That is, the basic tools used in witchcraft.  Many witches will tell you that you absolutely must have these tools in order to practice witchcraft.  Others might say that the only things that you need are your mind and body.  I must leave this to your own personal discretion.  It is true that the tools don't make the magic, however, using tools may help you to focus more clearly on the matter at hand and provide you with a deeper sense of participating in a ritualistic atmosphere.

I.     Athame - This is a double edged ritual knife that can be carved with special symbols, made from special materials, or personalized in other ways and empowered by you, the Witch.  It is generally used for focusing and directing energies.

II.    Chalice - This is the cup or grail, that is also seen as the cauldron, and the womb.  It is a receptacle for energies and a vessel of cooperation.  It is generally a feminine symbol of renewal, rebirth, and the promise of reincarnation.

III.   Wand - This is a magickal stick or staff used to direct and stir energy within the circle.  It can be as simple as a length of rough wood or as diversified and intricate a design as your imagination can create.  It's up to you!

IV.   Censor - This is used to burn herbs or incense in.
(Mine is a small cauldron.)

VI.   Shield/Pentacle - This is a wooden disk with a pentagram and/or other symbols carved into it or painted on it.  The pentacle is the connection to the material world that rests upon the altar as the circle is cast, taking us between the worlds and beyond.

VII.  Sage - This is used for smudging, to purify the space in which you
are working.

VIII. Candles - The color of the candles will depend upon the ritual that you
are performing.

IX.   Incense/herbs - This too will depend upon the activity that you are
engaging in.

X.    Self igniting Charcoal - Used in your censor to burn the incense and herbs.

These are some of the most basic tools used in witchcraft.  Others include your altar, altar cloth, ceremonial robes, statues and images, the besom or broom, runes, tarot deck, bell, stang, and cords.  As previously stated, much of this will depend upon the tradition that you are following.  Many of these items can be obtained from any friendly neighborhood witch store.  If you don't know where one is, check out the first link listed on my home page.  This site lists shops in your area by state.
