How big are the pins?

They are thin, not much wider than a hair and vary in size from about 3cm to 10cm.  They are not a "needle" - there isn't a hole through the top or through the shaft.  They are a  special, sterile pin with a small head on the top to make them easy to insert.  See "Are the pins safe?" (below) for more info.

Are the pins safe?

Yes, most definitely!  All pins used in our practice are sterile, single-use pins that are safely individually packaged in clear insertion tubes and immediately disposed of in a proper "sharps container" after use. No pin is ever reused.  No pin is ever used that is dropped or that is from broken packaging.

Does it hurt?

You may experience little or no discomfort during the insertion of the acupuncture needles.  if you feel anything upon insertion, it will be nothing more than a mosquito bite. So, if you can handle a mosquito bite, you can handle acupuncture.

Below each acupoint is a pool of qi, and as the pin contacts it, you may feel a warmth, cooling, dull ache, or a sense of pressure.

If anything feels uncomfortable, be sure to let your acupuncturist know so the pin may be adjusted to comfort. The treatment may last from ten to forty minutes, depending on your constitution (the weaker it is, the shorter the treatment time) and on the problem being treated.

What should I do before coming to an appointment?

Please eat before your treatment if possible.  If you can, don't brush your tongue for several days before your appointment, but feel free to brush your teeth.  The coating on your tongue can help your acupuncturist determine the state of your health.

More info can be found here

Should I tell my acupuncturist about the prescription drugs I'm taking?

Yes, definitely!  Be sure to also mention if you are pregnant, have cosmetic or surgical implants of any kind such as pins used to mend a broken bone or if you have a pacemaker.  Before your first treatment, your acupuncturist will consult with you, take a  complete medical history and perform several evaluations such as checking your pulses (there are several in Chinese medicine) and examining your tongue coat.

Feel free to talk to your acupuncturist about any health concerns you have.
