It's been fun to hear from a lot of you after all these years! I've
been to some fun reunions in the last few years--my 25th HS Reunion
from my school in Massachusetts,
and my 20th Vet School Reunion. It seems like the 40s are a nice age to
reconnect with old friends.
I graduated from Colorado State in Fort Collins with my DVM in 1984,
and took my first job in a private practice in Rochester, NY, where I
met my
wonderful
future husband, Rich. After one year of work experience, including being
on call some nights and weekends in rotation, I got a job with a nonprofit
adoption
agency, the North Shore Animal League in beautiful Port Washington, on Long
Island. This is a no-kill shelter with huge volume, and I got tons of experience
in pediatric
conditions, infectious diseases, and surgery. After about 5 years, there
I was ready for a change and some independence, so started my own relief
veterinary
business. It's easy to work per diem in a large metropolitan area, and I
have control over my hours (I am able to ice skate for 2 hours M-F before
going
to
work). I love it!
My hubby is a computer consultant, and also has a lot of job opportunities
in this area. It wasn't too difficult to get him down to Long Island--and
he loves the water and the beaches. We were married in 1987, bought a
house and
a sailboat (25' Catalina), and have a house full of pets. We are certified
scuba divers
and enjoy vacations in the Caribbean. We've also been going to Hood River,
OR on a few summer vacations because he loves the windsurfing there, and
I enjoy
the hiking.
I really enjoy my life outside of work and have gone through a few serious
hobbies. I earned my black belt in Tae Kwon Do around age 30. Then I
played synthesizers
in an all original alternative (Gothic) rock band for about 5 years.
We actually had a bit of a following in the East Village, and got to
play
some famous
venues--CBGB's and the Limelight. Loads of fun! After that I learned
how to inline
skate and did some 5 wheel racing, before taking to the ice. I LOVE figure
skating! It has it all. Not only is it athletic and technically challenging,
it's a creative
outlet with the music, concepts, and costuming. I design and sew all
my own dresses and costumes, and especially like to perform "show" programs--acting
out a story or doing comedy. I have a team of Russian coaches who work
on my
jumps, spins, choreography, footwork, and I test through the levels of
the USFSA. I have a great time traveling to USFSA sanctioned adult competitions
and have
wonderful friends on the circuit. Our biggest event each year is the
Adult National Championships--this year held in Chicago with 550 competitors.
I won a bronze
medal for my interpretive program (see photo above of sailor with semaphore
flags)!
