 | June - Past LBA President Ken Raina - succumbed to cancer and passed away
on June 4
Ken was a fireball when it came to issues concerning Lake Boon. He
revived the annual Water Carnival weekend in 1993 from decades of
inactivity. He was a warrior against the weed infestation and turned
$5,000 in the LBA treasury into $25,000 (with a lot of hard work with
fundraising activities and a lot of creativity) to compete for Federal and
State grant money. He was a Big Voice for Lake Boon at all town
meetings and numerous town board meetings. He went to many COLAP
meetings to learn what was best for our lake. With his wife, Tami the
Lake Boon Gazette was born to share lake news to almost 500 households that
we still enjoy today. He was a leader in preventing the Air National
Guard from taking over the old Annex and turning it into a communications
facility with radio towers, paved parking for 500 trucks and cars and
hazardous spray-painting garages. It is now the well-known Assabet
River National Wildlife Refuge. Thank you, Ken!!

 | May -
 | At it's annual meeting on May 31, the majority of LBA members voted to
allocate a whopping $10,000 of it's treasury (a little over a
third of it's total) to help anyone whose wells are negatively affected
if Drawdown is eventually approved. Specific details of how the
money would be allocated were not known at the time. The vote was
"not a vote for or against drawdown", but as financial support
to help those in need if a need arose from drawdown. |

Let's Clean Up Stow -
Town-wide litter cleanup scheduled for May 9-10th
weekend - Winter has finally drawn to a close, and under all those snow banks is
... trash! The Stow Cleanup Group asks all citizens to pitch in and help
clean up the roads and neighborhoods of our town during the May 9-10th
weekend. A town free of litter is a great Mother's Day / Earth Day gift!
On Saturday, May 9th, from 8:00 to Noon, you can register for the event
and pick up free garbage bags and gloves. Come to the Stow Plaza and look
for our table on the grass area by Papa Gino's (Lower Commons). Registering
for the event is optional, but it will facilitate the pickup up of bags that
have been left along side the road by the Town Highway Department on
Monday.
So come on out and meet your neighbors and spend an hour or two cleaning
litter from the side of your own road, or anywhere in your neighborhood. You
should wear gloves to protect your hands from any broken glass, sharp metal
cans, and poison ivy. Please wear bright clothes or a reflective running
vest so passing cars can see you. Long pants and sleeves to protect your
arms and legs are also recommended.
When you are done, you can either toss the bags in your own trash can, or
leave them by the side of road. Send email to StowCleanup@gmail.com
with your street name, the number of bags you collected, and any stories or
pictures of your hard work. The best stories and photos will be printed in
the Stow Independent.
Do you want to help out even more? The Stow Cleanup Group is looking for
Road Captains to coordinate cleanup efforts with other families on their
street and get the word out. If you would like to serve as a Road Captain or
just agree to pick up litter, please contact us at StowCleanup@gmail.com.
