| Gary French Reports (10-1-09) | Gary French is once again taken upon himself to coordinate getting trees from the DNR. Last year, I participated in this program and recieved 75 trees which even after the driest summer in years, almost all of the trees survived. These are all different varities and many are already 2+ feet high. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS! There is an order form available - just click on this link - ORDERFORM. You will need to have it in to Gary by December 1st. |
| County Water Level Information (9-30-09) | Bob Wenzel was sent a report by Tyler Gruetzmacher of the county regarding Silver Lake water levels. During the fall, the level reached what appears to be an all time low or at least a recent all time low. Check out the chart at Water Levels |

ees and Shrubs now available! (9/1/08) |
At our Labor Day meeting, a local Barron County official talked about the need to have & the benefit of a vegetation buffer zone (a minimum of 30') between the lake and any lawn or clearing. It is also a county zoning requirement. At the same meeting Gary French, one of our members, presented a very simple and easy way to assist in building that buffer zone - by ordering inexpensive trees and shrubs from Baron County. Gary says: "Basically, we have the opportunity to obtain these trees and shrubs through the Barron County Soil and Water Conservation Department. On average it works out to be about $.60 (that is 60 cents) per plant. We do, however, have a fairly short window time wise. Barron County is ordering their plants for next year and need our order by early November hence the October 31, 2008 deadline. There is an online Order form in pdf format at Order Trees, but please note the following. "If you look at the first section of the form "Shrubs", for $16 you will get 5 of each kind of the 5 varieties listed for a total of 25 plants. In the section "Conifers" for $30 you will get 10 of each of the 5 varieties listed for a total of 50 plants. In the last section "Deciduous" you would get either 12 or 13 of the 2 varieties listed for a total of 25. They can just write on the form that this is what they want and enclose a check for the proper amount and mail it to me. If they would like 25 or 50 of any particular plant they should so indicate on the form and enclose a check. They can order as many plants as they want. If their name and phone number is not on the check they should also write that on the form. Delivery is planned for late April or early May from Barron County and we will notify those who ordered of the time and place to pick up their plants." |
|
Rules and Regulations (9/1/08) |
Soon we will add a separate tab that will contain all the pertinent information about DNR and County rules regarding shoreline maintenance etc. We will likely add a new tab to the left side of the site so we can highlight this section. Barron County officials have told me they will provide us some electronic guidelines and their regulations. |

Fish Hatchery Info (6/13/08) |
Silver Lake Association got news this spring from Heath Benike that SL will be able to operate a fish hatchery next year. Due to some rules conflict, it was not possible this year but these have been corrected for 2009. Also a new boat has been donated to assist the local folks in monitoring fish populations. See the full story at: Boat Donation |
|
Dues Information (6/13/08) |
Bob Wenzel has informed us that some dues that were paid recently have not
been processed due to a mix-up at the post office. There were dozens of
check that were being held by the Post Office because our P.O. Box was
filled with junk mail. Some of the checks go back several months. If
people are wondering why their checks haven't been cashed, this is
probably the reason. |
|
Walleye Update (3/1/08) |
I apologize this may be old news for a few as I'm using my group
email list from last spring. Sharp reports that the Dept. of Ag. has
shut down the hatcheries for this year due to the VHS issues in the state.
Walleyes for Tomorrow is working on the situation so that our project will
resume next spring as there is little hope to have this resolved for this
year. Everyone needs to know our hatcheries have been 100% compliant with
every step of the process and this temporary change is in effect for all
hatcheries in the state including DNR hatcheries. New steps will be
implemented to curb the VHS problem and we will have to be patient as
Walleyes for Tomorrow works us through this temporary delay with our
project.
Good news! There are other things the group can work on in our "off year" and the group is currently working on that. I will get those ideas to you when available. Fortunately Bob Wenzel will be able to store the hatchery trailer at his property for the year, thanks Bob! Last the Banquet is tentatively set for Monday June 16 at Turtleback in Rice Lake. Bear Sighting (6/10/07) |
Walter
King has a cabin on the north side of the Silver Lake bay and he reported
this week the sighting of a mother bear and two cubs. The mother bear
climbed his deck to get at his bird feeder and after he chased it down (I
do not know how), he tells us the mother bear took almost one hour to get
the cubs to come down from the tree near his place. He took these
pictures.

Burglary at Silver Lake (5/15/07) |
Dale Goergen Reports: "We had several things stolen from our shed sometime between 5/6 and 5/18. There was no evidence that they attempted to break into the house. We had the following items stolen":
The officer said that it is likely they may come back so I want to make sure everyone on the lake is aware and that they make sure that their homes, sheds, garages, etc. are secured when they are not around. The thieves take things they can turn into cash quickly at a pawn shop. If anyone has any information about this incident we would appreciate it if they would call us at 651-270-1240. We have filed a report with the Barron County Sherriff’s department. |

Latest on Fish Spearing by...
P Heath Benike (6/25/06) |
Fish speared by the tribe in the past three years:- 74 walleye in 2006- 47 walleye in 2005- 22 walleye in 2004. At this time , I do not feel that the lake association needs to stock any more fish. Our recent surveys indicate that several good walleye year classes were produced in 2003, 2004 and 2005 of which 80-90% were from natural reproduction and only 10% or so were from stocking. Since they are reproducing well on there own, most literature suggests to minimize stocking and some studies even suggest additional stocking could mess up the natural reproduction that is taking place. In 2008, we have a comprehensive fish survey and creel census scheduled for Silver Lake, after the completion of this survey, I would be happy to come to a meeting and discuss the results and future management plans for Silver Lake. One thing you could do is make sure to keep some largemouth bass, especially those in the 14-16 inch range. Some studies are suggesting that largemouth bass and walleye negatively interact with each other. Keeping the largemouth bass population low would likely maintain a viable walleye population. On the other hand, smallmouth bass are ok and I would suggest not harvesting a lot in the case of Silver Lake. Spearing Over the Years |

Where does that foam come from? (2/9/06) Answer thanks to Bob Wenzel
|
There's some foam blowing up onto my beach, where's it
coming from?
Most foam observed in lakes and streams is a product of nature; foam is not necessarily an indicator of pollution. Foam is created when the surface tension of water (attraction of surface molecules for each other) is reduced and air is mixed in, forming bubbles. Surface tension can be reduced by both natural organic compounds and by man-made soaps and detergents. Natural organic compounds are released by decomposing aquatic organisms (such as algae or fish) or leached from the soil. In a lake, wind, currents, and boats mix air with the organic compounds present to produce foam. The foam will frequently form parallel streaks in the open water, caused by wind-induced surface currents. It will also collect in large quantities on windward shores, coves, or in eddies. Natural foam has a somewhat earthy fishy aroma. Detergent foam in contrast will have a noticeable perfumey smell. |

| Barley
Straw (5/1/04) |
A recent television report on Twin Cites lakes showed how Barley Straw is being used to fight algae problems on small lakes and ponds. Evidently the straw gives off some chemical that is helpful or somehow lowers the phosphorous in the lakes. It was said that it is has been very effective for small lakes and ponds. You may wish to read up as lots of articles are vailable (Google - Barley Algae) Here are two links to view for more info:http://ianrpubs.unl.edu/wildlife/nf429.htm http://ohioline.osu.edu/a-fact/0012.html |

Adding "riprap" to shoreline to
prevent erosion |
You can get a permit to add rock to your shoreline to prevent erosion. You need to take pictures of the shoreline and send in an application to our local DNR representative - Dan Harrington (715-822-5421 ext.108). They will require that you put down a fabric base under the rock and that the rock does not extend more than a couple of feet from the current waterline. Rock can be purchased from a number of local contractors. The process is outlined on the following link, and you can download an application from there as well. DNR Waterway Permits |
