National Guild of Hypnotists 2003 Convention

Friday Aug 8 Presentation:  Hypnotherapy with the Close Encounter Experiencer

Presented by Craig R. Lang CHt, with Rebecca Scott CHt

Intro & Background

*      CL:            -    Got interested in CHt work, from CE4's investigated

-    Initial UFO field investigation cases:  "Jennifer", “Jade", “Sarah"

            -    Large percentage of work is with CE4 experiencers

*      RS:            -    UFO and Close Encounter Interests all of life.

*      A Strong CE4 Interest, and Personal Experiences

*      Hypnotherapist

CE4 Overview:

*      Approx 1% of population has 4+ experiencer indicators from Hopkins/Jacobs questionnaire

(Most would not consider themselves an experiencer - Jacobs: "unaware experiencer")

*      Definitions:   (UFO 101 – “types and kinds”)

1.      1st Kind = Sighting,

2.      2nd Kind = Evidence,

3.      3rd Kind = Entity,

4.      4th Kind = Interaction in the Reality of the Phenomenon

*      Close Encounter:  Interaction with a UFO in which detail can be discerned.

*      Anomaly:  Event which is not directly UFO related

*      Close Encounter of the 4th Kind = CE4 = Abduction.

Signs and symptoms of CE4 presence:  (Anomaly Indicators in Handout)

1.      Missing Time

2.      Phobias/Obsessions of outdoors, sleep, paranormal/UFOs/ETs

3.      Anomalous events (paranormal, animals and monsters, ghosts, etc…)

4.      Sudden change in physical/mental/spiritual health and state

5.      Flashbacks/Dreams/Memories of extraordinary/otherworldly events

6.      Family history of psychic and unexplained events

CE4 Therapy Considerations:

*      In most CHt practices: CE4 cases will seldom (if ever) occur

*      Indicators Show up clearly in case analysis:

CE4 history    Correlation w/ personal issues

*      In most cases CE4 work is like any other CHt work

*      Key differences:

                        - Contact may still be going on

                        - Unique issues: Extraordinariness --> isolation of experiencer from peers

                        - Comfort zone for the therapist

The Mission:  To help experiencer come to terms with the events in his/her own way.

            - Goal:  Acceptance-of or Independence-from phenomenon

            - Client needs to rebuild their own reality

- Client Individual Resolution:

   Some accept phenomenon.  Some resist phenomenon.

CE4 Events:  Range of "Concern" - from curiosity to post-traumatic effects

*      Post-Traumatic Events

*      Similar to other forms of traumatic issues

*      Where to begin:  Treat like PTSD

*      Need to manage fear

*      Can then proceed to explore encounters

*      Therapist comfort zone is a factor

              (May want to refer out if you, or client not willing)

Fear Management:

*      First need to manage fear

*      Parts work (and other stress reduction techniques)

*      Often, PTSD due to other ISE in experiencer's life

1.      Followup if client willing

2.      parts work as appropriate:

3.      Regress and Abreact core issue,

            (Note:  ISE may be external-to or prior-to CE4 events)

General Regression Steps (In Handout)

            - Clean therapy is paramount in CE4 work.

            - Repetition is generally the key to clean breaking of blocks.

            - Other regression factors and techniques

            - Follow therapy steps in handout (show handout)

            - Finish with confidence building and integrative suggestion work

Demonstration Regression

Debrief from Regression

Conclusion:  Once through any initial trauma issues

            - Able to go back into actual CE4 content (as appropriate)

            - Excellent research is possible

            - A rich set of experiences:  Many implications,

Many mysteries…..

Questions (if time)

Possible Indications of Close Encounter Activity

(In combination these may suggest but do not absolutely indicate CE4 events)

*      Unexpected Out of Body Experiences?

*      Sensations or Dreams of Flying: (Not OBE)?

*      Unexplained injuries, scars, body marks (such as scoop marks), or subcutaneous "foreign" bodies for which neither you nor your parents know the cause?

*      Women:

*      Unusual problems with pregnancy?

*      Disappearing Pregnancies?

Close Encounter Hypnotherapy Guidelines:

1) Accept as part of client's background

            - Stick to client's stated therapy goals:  CE4's are merely part of the background

            - Empathy + Discernment:  Accept CE4s as clients reality, avoid own conclusions

            - If major PTSD or medical issues, refer out - should see psychologist and/or MD

            - If unable to accept client's CE4 history, then refer out to another therapist

2) Include CE4 Indicator questions in Intake Interview

3) Check for “Post Contact Trauma” Issues such as:

            - Phobias/obsessions (especially regarding anything UFO-related)

            - Depression/Alienation,

            - Intrusive Thoughts

            - Panic Attacks

            - Vigilance/Fear of being watched (especially from sky)

            - Nightmares of UFOs, Aliens, etc...

4) If Post-Traumatic effects then treat as you would any other post-traumatic case

    Fear Management:

- Ego state work

- Desensitization

- Safe Place

5) Follow Standard hypnotherapy model for all other aspects of therapy

*      During initial positive regression: Establish safe place, Safety/Empowerment anchors

*      Clean regression is paramount - any suggestions during regression phase can be risky

*      Guide client to a time shortly before time of event

*      Allow to progress to and through time of event (will probably be blocks initially)

*      At end of event, rewind and repeat as many times as appropriate

*      Multiple repetitions through each CE4 event  (repetition is key to break blocks/screens)

*      First few passes: Allow scenario to develop.

*      Clear any blocks, abreactions, etc.

*      Later Reps: If ecology check OK, Can ask detailed Q's (eg: other sense modes)

*      Can chain back through earlier experiences to previous CE4s:    ("...This being seems familiar...")

*      Address any ego-state issues that arise from CE4s (Blocks, Fears, Guilt, etc...)

*      Conclude with Reframing, etc.  (I incorporate "growing light of understanding")

*      Suggestions where appropriate:

*      Ecology check

*      Allow/Manage subsequent safe memories and understanding to emerge

6) Twenty-Four-Hour Followup to check for subsequent memories, safety and ecology.
