Creating a New Reality - A Trial Run of the
MetaCreation Process

Some people seem to struggle through life with a limited view of their world. They feel stuck in an existence where there seems to be few options and little joy. But for many others, life seems to be full of smile and promise - always a wonderful new day beginning with the morning sun. We all live in the same world, so how can both people live in such different realities? Perhaps it is only their world views that are different. What if our view of the world is really what creates the reality we live in.
Victor Gibbons’ book MetaCreation of Personal Realities in Space and Time [Published by MetaCreation Institute, Atlanta, GA], and his accompanying talk at the 2001 National Guild of Hypnotists Annual Symposium, describe a process by which one can create one’s own reality - resulting in changes in one’s life path, perceptions, and experiences. The author develops this concept to a very high degree, building a description of how we create our own patterns of reality, and how we can replace undesirable patterns with more desirable ones. In this article we describe the results of some trial session work which we (Craig and Rebecca) did to test out some of the ideas which Dr. Gibbons presents, and some of our observations about his theories.
The book begins with basic theories of consciousness studies, spending a considerable amount of paper presenting this foundation material. This includes neural network theory, quantum holographic concepts, various aspects of eastern metaphysics, and chaos/attractor theory. He uses these to build his theory in which negative imprints on the clients psyche (what in hypnotherapy parlance would be called sensitizing events) create basins of attraction (ego states) which affect all subsequent thoughts and behavior. These form a perceptual filter which results in a perceived reality which the client does not desire. MetaCreation is therefore the creation of one’s own desired reality, by reducing/canceling negative psychological patterns from the psyche and replacing them with the newer, more desirable “reality” patterns.
The book uses a synthetic example of a man he calls “Ricky”, a middle level sales manager for a Middle American corporation. Ricky is under a lot of pressure – from his boss to increase his sales results, from his girlfriend to get married, etc… From Ricky’s perspective, the outside world seems to be placing demands on him which combine to reinforce a negative reality for him.
Ricky’s core issues come from his childhood, when he and his brother were abandoned by their father and neglected by their mother. Thus deep fears and resentments fill Ricky’s psyche. His brother Tommy also had many of the same effects, but somehow dealt with them in a completely different way – exploring the depths of his own mind and soul. Eventually, in a deep shamanic experience Tommy came to terms with his past. Tommy then goes on to guide Ricky through the same process – clearing and reframing the past, while building a new future and anchoring it with a form of empowerment symbolism.
The gist of these stories, and of the process which Dr. Gibbons describes, is that the best way to clear a negative pattern of reality is to create a more powerful, complimentary positive pattern. In the MetaCreation model, emphasis is on creation of this complimentary pattern to replace the negative one, which is often also reduced by abreaction and reframing. This new pattern will “seek and destroy” the negative one, replacing it with the more desirable reality.
In many ways, both the theory and the techniques are similar to the hypnotherapeutic model, with both emphasizing clearing and subsequent suggestion work. We concluded that, although a slightly different paradigm, Dr. Gibbons essentially describes hypnotherapy, but uses different terms and a somewhat different emphasis.
Two Example Clients
We employed the MetaCreation therapy model with two clients who were interested in exploring this process. We will refer to them as “Joe” and “Susan”. Susan is a nurse who works in a major metropolitan hospital. She finds the atmosphere there to be cold, uncaring, and authoritarian. Her desire is to develop a private healing practice, perhaps associated with a complimentary medical clinic. This is a nonspecific goal, and the objective of our session work was to form a new future reality which would guide Susan to crystallize and then realize her dream.
Joe is an engineer. He is also fascinated by the paranormal and the esoteric. He is an avid practitioner of eastern tradition meditation. In his avocational time he pursues interests that bridge esoteric topics and hard science. Joe would like to clear some of the negative patterns formed around past experiences, many in the corporate world. He would like to build a new reality in which the world of physics and engineering, which he loves, is in harmony with his esoteric and spiritual interests.
“Susan – The Healer”
My (CL) work with Susan went very quickly. She was very much ready to build and accept a new future reality for herself.
As with most hypnotherapy work, to clear a pattern one first needs to find it. We therefore did hypnoanalysis work, visiting into a number of scenarios in Susan’s life where she found herself in a hierarchical, authoritarian world. On several occasions this involved the workplace – which for her was the medical world. After experiencing several scenarios, we were able to locate, and then address, an ego state centered on the feelings of frustration and powerlessness she felt in her authoritarian world. This enabled us to do parts work to reframe and alleviate the issues involved.
We were then able to project forward to a new future reality as Susan imagined herself in the perfect professional scenario. In this scenario, she is both a therapist and a complimentary medical practitioner. She does mind/body therapy as well as treating psychological issues. She works in a very open, very warm, hospital or healing clinic. In this setting, there is not a hierarchy of authority, but rather a cooperative synthesis of both eastern and western healing. Not a treatment of the body only, but a treatment of the soul, body and mind. It is the job she loves – and she has now transformed it into a future meta-reality.
We anchored this new vision with several NLP patterns, then re-oriented to the present. Interestingly, during the usual date-check to determine that the client has re-oriented to the present time, when I asked Susan the date, she replied “2011” – ten years in the future. This meant that Susan now had a definite horizon, a goal in which to realize her objective. We then reoriented Susan to the present moment and brought her out of trance - reinforcing her new meta-reality with suggestion work as she emerged to conscious awareness.
Since our work, Susan has experienced a number of improvements in her life circumstances, making steady progress toward her goal of a private healing practice. She has investigated possible opportunities with complimentary medical clinics and seems to be moving steadily toward her toward her dream.
“Joe – the Explorer”
My (RS) work with Joe similarly resulted in some very interesting and beneficial improvements in Joe’s life – in both his professional and his avocational world. Joe’s primary presenting issue was a negative pattern which had arisen around authority figures – primarily in his work environment. He had recently left a job after many years of service to that organization, because of the authoritarian structure of that group, as well as the uncaring/unfeeling attitude of senior staff towards those below them in the “food chain”.
Joe’s vision is of a freer, more open, and more creative career in which he could use both his right and left brain skills to explore new areas of study. He dreams of a career in which metaphysical study and technological research could be combined as a new science.
In several regression sessions, Joe revisited several past events in which he experienced demeaning criticism, fear of failure, and related negative patterns. Eventually, Joe found himself experiencing a metaphysical scenario in which he felt abandoned in a situation which he both feared and despised. After a strong abreaction followed by extensive reframing, he was able to release the emotion which had been bottled up for much of his lifetime, and focus on a future of growth and exploration.
Following the regression I (RS) then invited Joe to envision a future scenario in which he is an important researcher with a foundation which applies new science to previously unexplored areas. In this future scenario, he conducts both physics/technology research and metaphysical/esoteric work. Joe has also written and lectured on this topic at professional workshops, symposia, and universities. At the foundation, traditional science and new science have merged so that a greater frontier is becoming more open to the scientific endeavor. Rather than being hierarchical, authority in this organization is by the collective will and consciousness of the foundation. In Joe’s words, “My boss is us”.
We anchored this vision with several suggestion patterns, including one to encourage the awareness of guiding synchronicities along the way. Since the session work, Joe reports that there has been a tremendous surge in opportunities in his life. Joe is steadily beginning to find ways to achieve his dream, but still has a long road to travel.
It is said that a long journey begins with a single step. Both Joe and Susan have certainly observed this. But now that they have done much to alleviate the negative patterns that were holding them back, the road is open to them like never before. Even though their overall goals seem elusive and fantastic today, dreams have a way of coming true. We plan to keep in contact with both of them over the next few months –perhaps even years – observing their progress as they move toward their metacreated future realities. In so doing, we have noted that the MetaCreation process appears to be a very valid way of resolving old patterns and developing future life paths.
