Bird Links

We will have much to say, show, and link about birds.  We like 'em.

Owl Cam

One of the best bird sites due to the dedication and skill of the maintainer.  Note: 3/23/03 June has finally returned.  Ward and she are together, so there may be owlets again this year!

Update: June and Ward lost their three healthy owlets to a maurading fisher on 5/17/03.   This hard blow does not change the fact of long-term success of the two parent owls in raising baby barred owls 5 times over 6 years.  And the OwlCam site is a class act, however the chips fall.  Our sympathy and good wishes to the OwlCam operator.

Update:  as of August 27, 2004, there has been no activity reported around the next box.  The OwlCam operator remains hopeful that other owls may nest in the box some time in the future.  A DVD will become available eventually that will give OwlCam fans high quality video of Ward and June and their nesting adventures.

From the site maintainer's comments, it seems probable that Ward died in the fisher attack on the nest box, but June survived, flying elsewhere to continue her life and, hopefully, to produce more baby barred owls.  Good luck to her -- a lady we got to know and care about...

Update May, 2006: The long awaited DVD is now available.  Go to this OwlCam page to order it:

View Nesting Birds
This great website is maintained by the folks at the University of Pittsburgh.  Each of the sites listed features live video and/or updated photographs of nesting birds. You can follow the efforts of the parents and the progress of the young by periodically visiting these sites. Links to sites from past nesting seasons can be found among the archives.  The 2003 nesting activities are underway.  Nest-site coverage is currently taking place at each site marked with an asterisk (*). And the wanderings of Peregrine Falcons are being followed through the spring of 2003 at the Peregrine Falcon "satellite tracking" sites listed.

Cornell University Lab of Ornithology
As far as I know, Cornell is the leading university in the US in terms of its courses and projects that focus on birds.  Their What We Do statement: "The Lab is a nonprofit membership institution whose mission is to interpret and conserve the earth's biological diversity through research, education, and citizen science focused on birds. Our programs work closely together and with citizen scientists, government and non-government agencies, and organizations across North America and beyond to learn more about birds, including how to best protect them and their habitats."
