Taken 3/8/03. The structure and colors of the iris are worth
a close look. To emphasize these things, I worked with a layer in
high-contrast grayscale and a partially transparent colored layer over that.
Among possible fancies, it looks like a space ship designed by a race
of intelligent bees.

These curious horses wandered over to pass the time with the photographer
one pleasant September day.

This is one of my all-time favorite shots -- so much so I printed and framed
it. It lives beside my bed and reminds me of pleasant dreams.

1990? Young Barn Owl
Scanned in photograph, I'm guessing it was taken around 1990 on the
grounds of a California mission. The young barn owl must spend some
time on the ground after it leaves the nest and takes its place in the
sky later on. This one was nearly fearless -- it only stopped preening
when we got too close, within a few feet. We backed off and it resumed
tidying up.

Feathers - The amazing feather, in all its forms, defies comprehension
in its adaptability to diverse purposes. It protects and warms this
female mallard in near-freezing water and can with flexible strength hoist
her in a heartbeat into vertical flight.

Taken 3/14/03 The flight of any bird is impressive, the air is
thin, and the effort is great. But the casual hoisting of several pounds
of duck into the transparent atmosphere, with such superb control, leaves
me in admiration every time. My digital images show ducks rotating the
wing as needed in, I estimate, a 130 degree or more range.
