My BARHAM ancestors originate from Robert FITZ-URSE born 1150 in Kent, England. His son, Warine FITZ-URSE DeBEREHAM, was born abt. 1175 in Kent, England and died after 1210. My ancestor Thomas Barham... was born in Virginia in 1785 where the Barham families were among the earliest settlers in the 1600's.
Thomas and Sarah Barham had nine children in Guilford Co., N.C. before
they settled in Carroll County (near Madison County, Tennessee)
in the mid to late 1820's. Their children were:
1. Cassandra Barham, born March 24, 1814 in North Carolina, married John
Hicks Lanier, Sr. in 1834. They had eight children. She died March 18, 1885.
(Cassandra and John were my great-g-g-g grandparents).
2. John A. Barham, born Feb. 19, 1812, in N.C. John was most probably married three times, first to an "unknown wife" (at this time), second to Mary Caroline Gurley on July 11, 1848 in Carroll Co., TN, and a third time to Priscilla J. (Unknown maiden name at this time). John had at least four children.
3. William Barham, born in N.C.
4. Sarah Barham, born about 1816 in N.C. married a York.
5. James Henry Barham, born 1817 in N.C., married an M.J. (maiden name
unknown). James and M.J. had eight children.
6. Mary Barham, born before 1820 in N.C., married Harvey McBride on Jan. 30,
1834 in Madison Co., TN.
7. Andrew Jackson Barham, born 1820 in N.C. married Clarinda Page on Nov. 29,
1846. Clarinda was the daughter of John and Nancy Page who settled Carroll
Co., TN in the 1820's from S.C. Andrew Jackson Barham was a farmer and a
Methodist minister. He and Clarinda had ten children: Mary, Thomas, Catharine, Jane, Sarah "Sally", Adeline, Ella, Henry, Clarinda P., Twin of Clarina P. Barham.
8. Thomas C. Barham, born 1825 in N.C., married Louisa S. Orgain
on March 1, 1848 in Madison Co., TN.
9. Adeline Barham, born March 26, 1827 in N.C., married John Donnell, Jr. on
March 27, 1848 in Carroll Co., TN. Adeline and John had three known children.
Adeline died April 5, 1853 and is buried in the Barham Family Cemetery in
Carroll Co., TN.

The Barham family has traced their ancestors to English Royalty, beginning in Kent where the town of Barham surrounds Sissinghurst Castle, the ancestral home of the Barhams, members of the House of Lords. "Beginning with Warine de Barham, who in 1210 held lands in Berham, near Canterbury, by Knight service as one of the military tenants of the Archbishop of Canterbury (Article by R.G. Fitzgerald - Uniache, B.A.F.R.S.A. Sussex Arch. Soc. LVI (1914) p. 110)".
Beginning with Charles Barham, who married an Elizabeth (maiden name unknown, but probably Elizabeth Ridley, of Isle of Wright County, sister of William Ridley and daughter of Peter Ridley)... resided in James City County, late in his life and died there in 1683. A portion of his will was found in the record office in London and he left his estate to his "eldest son and heir", Charles (2) Barham.
Charles and Elizabeth Barham had the following known children:
1. Elizabeth Barham, married Thomas Binns
2. Priscilla Barham, married Robert Hart.
3. Charles Barham, "the eldest son and heir".
4. Robert Barham, born abt. 1679; d. 1760, mar. Elizabeth Clark (see below).
Charles and Elizabeth's son Robert Barham, b. abt. 1679, married about 1700 to Elizabeth Clark, daughter of John and Mary Clark of Lawnes Creek. Robert was born abt. 1679, Southwarke Parish, Surry Co., VA. He spent most of his life in Surry but moved to Southampton County when he was older. Robert died in 1760 in Southampton Co., VA, and his will dated Jan. 18, 1748 was probated in Southampton on April 14, 1760 (W.B. I pg. 332).
Robert and Elizabeth Clark Barham had five sons and four daughters as follows:
(1) Charles Barham, (son of Robert and Elizabeth Clark Barham) was b. abt. 1706 in Surry Co., VA; married prob. Sarah Judkins (dau. of John Judkins of Surry) and a second time to a widow named Ann Arrington. Charles died in Southampton in 1791.
Children of Charles Barham and wives (I do not have a record of which wife had which children) were as follows:
...(1a) Robert Barham mar. Hannah (?), was left property by his father's will, d. in Southampton 1797; will dated March 20, 1792, probated May 15, 1797, mentions his wife Hannah, daus. Peggy, Charlotte and Sally Barham, Mary Cooper, Milling Hutchings, Patsy Gilliam and Betsy Gilliam, and son Howell Barham.;

...(1d) Mary Barham, born abt. 1735, possibly married a Harris or David Newsom.;
...(1e) James Barham, b. abt. 1730 mar. probably Mary Thorpe, was Lieutenant of Militia in 1755 in Southampton Co.; and died 1792, his will was dated Feb. 26, 1791 and probated in Southampton June 9, 1792 mentioned son Joel, drs. Martha Harris, Sarah Fisher and Rebecca Holliman, son James, daus. Mary Barham and Susannah Meacom, sons Judkins Barham, Samuel Barham, Timothy Thorp Barham and John Barham.
(2) Robert Barham, (son of Robert and Elizabeth Clark Barham) was b. before 1711. He died in Surry Co., VA in 1770 and had at least one son named William.
(3) Martha Barham (daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Clark Barham).
(4) John Barham, (son of Robert and Elizabeth Clark Barham), mar. Elizabeth Edwards (daughter of Thomas Edwards and Elizabeth Newsom). John's will was dated Sept. 29, 1770, and proven July 1771. He named the following children:

...(4c) Joseph Barham, b. abt. 1745 in Surry Co., VA and died there in 1823. He mar. abt. 1765 to Sally Lane (dau. of Thomas and Mary Lane) and had seven children: Joseph, b. 1768, mar. Ann Cocke Hunnicutt (dau. of Robert B. Hunnicutt, Sr. and Elizabeth Binns.; James, b. abt. 1770; Thomas b. abt. 1772; Charles, b. abt. 1774; Mary Ann, b. abt. 1776 mar. Batts Lane; Nancy, b. abt. 1778; Elizabeth b. abt. 1780 mar. in 1808 to Robert B. Hunnicutt, Jr. (more descendant info. can be found on this line on pages 28-29 of "Southside Virginia Families" Vol. II by John Bennett Boddie's "Barham of Surry".

(5) Thomas Barham, (son of Robert and Elizabeth Clark Barham), b. Dec. 15, 1717 in Surry Co., VA; died 1784 in Sussex Co. (formerly Surry Co.) married Sarah Newsom (b. aft. 1720 Isle of Wright , d. aft. 1784). Thomas Barham lived for quite some time in Isle of Wright Co., and later moved to Sussex Co. where he died in 1784. His will, dated Aug. 17, 1782 mentions only his wife Sarah and his daughter Lucy. There were other children though as follows:
(5a) Thomas Barham, mar. prior to 1775 to Elizabeth Moss and had at least one daughter Mary Polly.
(5b) Charles Barham, mar. Mary Harwood.
(5c) Benjamin Barham, mar. Sarah and had at least one son John...
(5d) Martha (Patty) Barham, born Jan. 4, 1763.
(5e) Lucy (Polly) Barham, b. May 2, 1768.
(5f) possibly Hartwell A. Barham (per Bill Barham - see below).
(5g) possibly Ann Barham (per Bill Barham).
(6) Benjamin Barham, (son of Robert and Elizabeth Clark Barham), was born after 1711 in Surry Co., VA and died in Southampton Co., VA in 1797. He married Mary (probably Judkins).
(7) Mary Barham (dau. of Robert and Elizabeth Clark Barham) - I have nothing further on.
(8) Sarah Barham, (dau. of Robert and Elizabeth Clark Barham) - I have nothing further on.
(9) Elizabeth Barham, (dau. of Robert and Elizabeth Clark Barham) - I have nothing further on.
Hartwell A. Barham, (per Bill Barham, was a son of Thomas Barham and Sarah Newsom), was born 1759 in Southampton Co., VA; d. March 5, 1846, Stokes Co., N.C. He married (1st) to Ceilia Freeman on Jan. 17, 1780 in Sussex Co., VA. Hartwell married (2nd) to Elizabeth (Betsy) McKillip July 21, 1819 in Stokes Co., N.C. and (3rd) to Charity Elliott, on Oct. 11, 1841 in Stokes Co., N.C.
Hartwell served in the Revolutionary War. Hartwell’s son Josiah Barham, who migrated to Tennessee married Rachel Holbook, second to Lydia Linville and had 13 children, including a son named Hartwell. This
family was in Maury Co., TN in the 1820’s, then on to Gallatin Co., IL, then

The following information was found in Perry Co., Tenn. - Family & Histories
William Thomas BARHAM, born April 4, 1861, was the son of Balaam BARHAM and Henrietta Barber, buried in Sharp Cemetery, Sharp Hollow.
The children of William Thomas BARHAM were:
(1) Jim BARHAM born Nov. 11, 1880; died Oct. 3, 1908, buried in Hunt Hill Cemetery. He married June 16, 1901 in Perry Co. to Minnie Dial (b. 1882), daughter of Martin and Maggie Dial. The two children of Jim and Minnie Barham were: Emery E. Barham, (Oct. 30, 1904 - Dec. 22, 1906), buried in Hunt Hill Cemetery, and Eilene Barham, born 1908.
(2) Anna L. BARHAM, born March 1883; died June 8, 1911, buried in Cook Cemetery.
(3) Johnny B. BARHAM, born Feb. 1886; died Feb. 21, 1902, buried in Sharp Cemetery.
(4) Maggie Euroth BARHAM, born March 3, 1888, died May 16, 1946, buried in Sharp Cemetery. She married Andrew Jackson "Jack" Russell (1880-1923), on June 24, 1904. Jack and Maggie Russell had the following four children: Thomas Floyd Russell (1905-1972); Beulah Mae Russell (b. 1909); Arthur John Russell (1914-1990); Josie Delila Russell(b. 1922).
(5) Isaac Haudie BARHAM, born 1892, (WWI Veteran) died in Nashville. He married Carrie Spencer on April 3, 1910, and had three children: Willie Mae BARHAM; Lorine BARHAM and Roy Thomas BARHAM.
