CANSLER SURNAME DISTRIBUTION IN THE U.S. (Provided by Hamrick Software)

canslermap.gif - 3.5 K

The color of each state indicates how frequently you will find someone with this surname in each state (based on 1990 census). For instance, if a state is colored red, then 1 in 100 people (or more) in that state have the surname. Similarly, yellow means approximately 1 in 500 or so have the surname, green means 1 in 1000, and blue means 1 in 10,000 (or less).

From what I've been told, there are "two separate" Cansler lines one that originated with a Philip GANTZLER/CANSELOR (b. 1739 or 1741) who came from Germany with his father Johann Conrad Gentzler from Hesse Damstadt, Wurtenbert, Germany. Arrived in the US on Ship Elliot Aug 24, 1749. Phillip mar. in York Co. PA to Juliana (Uly) Wintermyer b. 1 Apr. 1764, Christened 15 Apr. 1764 Christ Lutheran Church, York Co., PA.

Philip's tombstone read Philip W. "Genseler". Philip and family moved with his family to what is now Lincoln Co., NC late 1766. He and his wife had several children (in York Co., PA and Lincoln Co., NC). He died in Lincoln Co., N.C. on 7 October 1804. His children (as listed in his will) were:

1. Catharine who married a Mr. Cline.
2. Margaret (b. 1759; d. 1833), married a Philip Devepaugh (1751-1825).
3. Caty who married John Finger.
4. Mary who married a Mr. Garden.
5. Elizabeth Cancelor, probably never married.
6. Barbara Cancelor married Henry Troutman.
7. John Cancelor married Barbara Rudisill and relocated to Rutherford Co., N.C where they raised their family: a son Philip and two daughters. He died 28 Sept. 1828 and is buried next to his wife on his old plantation in Rutherford Co., NC It is now a cow pasture. He may have been the eldest son of Philip and may have been born between 1760-1765 or before.
8. Philip Cancelor married Mary Quiggle (Quickle).
9. George Cancelor (1770-1830) married Margaret Finger (1776-1832), daughter of Peter Finger.
10. Conrade Cancellor married Barbara Rudisill.

  • 21 Jul 1997 - Ralph Cansler (NEW e-mail as of 11-28-99) :rwcansler@aikenelectric.net) (former e-mail:rwcansle@home.ifx.net)is a descendant of the Canslers (above) originally from Burke County, North Carolina (through Conrad son of Philip W.) who settled in Monroe County, Tennessee.

The other Cansler line (my husband's line) - may possibly tie into the Philip W. Cansler of German descent line (above) of Lincoln Co., NC - but nothing has been found yet that would prove it... In fact, unlike the Philip Gentzler/Cansler line who intermarried with others of German descent, our John Cansler line intermarried with those of English descent... (just a thought... that was pointed out by Stella Haggerty).
Mrs. Stella Cansler Haggerty (4-5-97), who has researched Cansler's since 1983, states there were two separate John Cansler lines... One John Cansler, was a son of Philip W. Cansler (above),
John (son of Philip) settled in Rutherford Co., NC with his family and appeared in Rutherford Co. NC Census for 1800 and 1810.
The other John Cansler line - (my husband's line) that begins with John Cansler SR (b. abt. 1750-56, SC). Census showed that he was a resident of Pendleton Co., SC for the census years of 1800 and 1810.

    Our Cansler Ancestors from S.C.

From what I have gathered so far, our "earliest" known Cansler begins with:
John Cansler, SR. (born about 1750-56 in Pendleton District, S.C.?). Stella Cansler Haggerty found information that John served in the Revolutionary War and applied for a pension in 1822 saying he was 72 years old. The signature on his application for Rev. War was John "Kansler". John Cansler, Sr. had at least four sons (according to Stella Cansler Haggerty):

    1. James Cansler b. ca. 1778, York Co., S.C. married Elizabeth Golden. Died ca. 1850 Christian Co., KY. (See "Fellow Cansler Researchers" below - Carol Ficklin is a descendant of James...)

    2. John Cansler, Jr. b. 10 Oct. 1783 and mar. 10 Dec. 1808 in Pendleton Co., SC to Anna Henderson. He died 8 November 1867 in Pickens Co., S.C.

    3. Nathaniel Henderson Cansler, b. ca. 1785 mar. Polly "Unknown" and died ca. 1830 in McMinn Co., TN.

    4. William Cansler, mar. Elizabeth Henderson and d. May 1835 in McMinn Co., TN.

"John CANCILLER" (Sr.) was shown on the 1800 S.C. Census - Pendleton District with the following statistics:
1 Male age 45 years & older. His wife must have died at an early age - and his children must have been living elsewhere...???

John Cansler, Jr. (b. 1780, S.C.) married Anna Henderson (b. abt. 1790, S.C.) and at this point, I only have information on one child, their daughter Elizabeth Cansler (born 27 December 1813 in Pickens Co., S.C.)
Elizabeth Cansler married Bradwell DAY, son of Benjamin Day and Rebecca Smith. John Cancellor (shown as age 70) was shown next door to this Bradwell DAY family during the 1850 Pickens Co., S.C. Census, and his wife Anna CANCELLER was shown to be residing with her daughter and husband Bradwell DAY during the 1870 Pickens Co., S.C. Census (Anna was age 80).

Elizabeth Cansler and husband Bradwell DAY had the following ten children:

Lucretia Ann DAY, Francis M. DAY, Elizabeth DAY, Nathaniel DAY, Allen DAY, Elias DAY, Martha DAY, Alonzo DAY, Andrew J. DAY (my husband's line), and Laura DAY. (All children born between the years of 1830-1855).

Children: Catharine wife of Christian MULL, Magdalena wife of Henry Wehler, Elizabeth wife of Henry WUNDER, Anna wife of Philip GENTZLER, Margaret and Susanna.

NOTE - The following observation is from a fellow researcher (who provided the information above) - she is of N.C. German descent and had gathered the information (above) and shared the following comment:
"NOTE - FROM THE DATES, I ASSUME THAT PHILIP GENTZLER MARRIED TO ANNA LAN IS A DIFFERENT PERSON FROM PHILIP GENTZLER MARRIED TO JULIANNA WINTERMEYER, WHOM WE BELIEVE CAME TO N.C. IN THE 1760'S."
"A POSSIBLITY IS THAT YOUR HUSBAND'S S.C. CANSLER LINE DESCENDS FROM A NEPHEW OF PHILIP GENTZLER (d. 1804), WHO CAME SOUTH AT A LATER DATE THAN HIS UNCLE."

The researcher (mentioned above) also provided the following information:

From the book "TAX LIST OF YORK COUNTY, PA, 1779"

Codorus Township: Philip Gentzler, 2 cattle, Tax 7.10.0

Codorus Township is southwest of the town of York, and is mostly populated by persons of German descent. Five persons named LAW (I believe should be LAU) are listed.

From Pickens County, S.C. Estate Records:

I found no wills for any variation of spelling of (C)ANSLER on S.C. Will Transcripts on microfilm for the index years of 1782-1868.

The following family was mentioned in an Estate Record (I found this in my notes and could not find a date, etc.) I will have to try and find this information again and make a note of the date and source -

    (John Cansler and wife Ann)
Paid Thomas M. Cansler his share $264.48

    FELLOW CANSLER RESEARCHERS

  • 21 Apr 1997 - Trevor Cansler has the following question(s) regarding his Cansler line:
Trevor Cansler - currently attending Ohio State Univeristy, working toward my Bachelor's Degree in music. I am a mulatto whose father is black. Every generation, a family member searches for our geneology but always gets stuck. I noticed that a John Cansler in your article owned 11 slaves. Is it possible that you may direct me to a source to find if this John Cansler is the source of our surname? There is much difficulty for Blacks to make family links because of the adoption of their previous owners' names. My family and I would greatly appreciate any help you can offer.

  • 3 Apr 97 - Harold Johnson of P.O. Box 659, Prince Frederick, MD 20678, says that his gggrandmother was Elizabeth Cansler (Canselor) b c1803 Rutherford Co NC, married abt 1820 Daniel Johnson Jr. b abt 1793 Rutherford Co. NC. Elizabeth's parents were John Cansler b 1760, d Sept 28, 1828 Rutherford CO. NC and Barbary Rudisill b Aug 27, 1762 d Oct 01, 1844 Rutherford CO. NC. Elizabeth's grandparents were Phillip W. Cansler and Julie.
    Elizabeth's siblings were:
Phillip Cansler md. Marion(Mary) Johnson (Daniel Jr.'s sister!)
Julia Ann Cansler md. William DePriest
Catherine Cansler md. James w. Carson
He says that all of his Cansler information has 'surfaced' after the first of this year and he has documents confirming all except Phillip W. Cansler and Julie. But he says he has good reason to believe that they are indeed Elizabeth's grandparents.
