couchsurname.gif - 3.5 K

The color of each state indicates how frequently you will find someone with this surname in each state. For instance, if a state is colored red, then 1 in 100 people (or more) in that state have the surname. Similarly, yellow means approximately 1 in 300 have the surname, green means 1 in 1000, and blue means 1 in 10,000 (or less).

I found the following three "single" sisters (all in the same household) in the 1900 Census of Pickens Co., S.C. and can't help but wonder if they are the daughters of Robert and Mary Ann Couch (above). It may be that they "fibbed" a little on their ages for the census taker...

Melinda COUCH, (b. abt. 1819, SC) daughter of John Couch, Sr. and Mary Ann Prater/Prather, married Alexander ORR (1817-1897) about 1843.

According to Kerry Ann Reese Harding she states she believes her ancestor John Lawrence Orr was the son of Malinda Couch and Alex Orr. She found the info. in an LDS Ancestral File submission (but stated she does not know the sources used). According to 1880 census for Anderson Co., S.C., John Lawrence Orr lived two houses from Alex and Malinda Couch Orr in Brushy Creek Township. He was born Jan. 1845 in S.C. and mar. Annie Murphy abt. 1877 and died in 1919. They are both buried at Mt. Airy Baptist in Piedmont SC with some of their children and grandchildren. In 1900 their children were: Mamie, F. Gaston (also called Jason), Ada Elizabeth (mar. John Washington Capps), Ida (mar. Jess Henry Capps), Willie, Maggie and Lillian. In the 1880 census (when Alex and John L. were living two houses apart) there are other children listed as Alex and Malinda's... they were James (listed as age 21) - which I have listed below; a daughter Marietta (could be Malinda? age 19); a daughter Carrie (age 17); and a son Pot? Dorcas P. Couch, born 5 October 1825, S.C.; died 2 October 1904, buried in Jameson Family Cemetery (per Pickens Co. SC Cemetery Survey Vol. I).
Dorcas P. Couch was the daughter of John Couch Sr. and Mary Ann Prater.
Dorcas married about 1843 to William M. JAMESON (He died 12 May 1864, while fighting during Civil War) William M. JAMESON was the son of William and Rebecca Fowler Jameson. Dorcas P. Couch-Jameson remarried a 2nd time to a Mr. ROBISON by 1871.

SIX Children of Dorcas COUCH and William M. JAMESON:

2. Andrew Pickens Jameson, b. abt 1846
3. Gerald T. Jameson, b. abt 1848
4. Mary “Jane” E. Jameson, b. abt 1851 married Sydney Spencer STEGALL. (It’s very likely that Sydney Stegall was married previously to her sister Martha Dorcus Jameson and that Martha died early in their marriage, and he remarried Mary “Jane” after Martha’s death). Mary E. Jameson went by her nickname “Jane”.
5. William Couch Jameson, b. 5 January 1852 died 19 October 1930, buried in Jameson Family Cemetery (Pickens Co., S.C. - from Pickens Co. S.C. Cemetery Survey Vol. I).
