A fellow Dolan researcher Michael Andrew Dolan Møller stated "The Dolans of today are the descendants of the Gaelic septs of O'Dubhlain or O'Dobhlain, who were located in the Barony of Cloumacnowen in eastern County Galway, as well as in the Barony of Athlone in County Roscommon. (Republic of Ireland.) Sometimes the Irish septs were anglicised as the Doolan and also Dowling. With migration the name was further established in counties Cavan, Leitrim and Fermanagh. The name today is widespread. It is however in the five counties of its origin that it is found in its greatest numbers.

Variants: O'Dolan, Doolan, O'Dowlane, Dowlan, Dowlin.
Motto: VIRTUTE ET FIDELIS. "By valour and fidelity."
Name meaning: Defiance.

DOLAN COUSINS ONLINE...

  • 16 Dec 1997 - Mike Dolan (mdolan@linesoft.com) My Mother is very much into our genealogy. I had quite a laugh when I saw that the name meant "defiance"! I had always been told (family lore) that the O'Daughlin meant "Black Clan" because of the Moorish infiltration into Southern Ireland and Galway Bay in particular. My brother has visited Galway and says an old ruin stands where the "family" castle purportedly stood. He did locate some Dolans buried in the cemetery. Michael Francis Dolan.
