My Etheridge ancestor information is "extremely" limited at this time.
My line begins with Lydia ETHERIDGE - she was born about 1820-1822 in
Tennessee. (In the 1880 census, she lists her parent's birthplaces as "N.C." and her maiden name
on her death certificate is listed as "Etheridge".
Lydia Etheridge married about 1840, probably in Dickson Co. TN
(a marriage record has not yet been found) to Zachariah Thomas, born abt. 1791 in Virginia.
Zachariah and Lydia Etheridge THOMAS first appear in the 1850 DICKSON Co., TN census.
*NOTE: Residing a few doors away from Zachariah and Lydia (Etheridge) THOMAS is
Joseph ETHERIDGE, (age 49) a possible father (or older brother) for Lydia that meets the age
requirements (he would have been a young father at the age of about 19) and birth location of NC...
It's interesting to note that Lydia named a daughter "Nancy"..., although Joseph's wife Nancy
was much to young to have a 30 year old daughter at the age of 39!... unless this was a 2nd
marriage for Joseph...?
Another nearby possible relative (brother?), residing a few doors away is Willoughby ETHERIDGE
(age 44, b. N.C.) and his family... Were Willoughby and Joseph brothers? Was Lydia ETHERIDGE-THOMAS
their younger sister? So many questions...

Zachariah and Lydia Etheridge THOMAS' son John M. Thomas was born about 1846 in Dickson County, Tennessee. John M. Thomas married Bettie Lewis (b. 2 January 1852 in West Plains, Missouri). The widow Lydia Etheridge-Thomas was residing with John M. and Bettie THOMAS during the 1880 Humphreys Co. TN census, at the age of 58, and states that both her parents were born in N.C.
Another "possibility" for Lydia's parent or family member was Rhoda CROSS, who probably the mother of Wm. and Israel ETHERIDGE of Humphreys Co. TN:

Roda!) If Mary is one of her eldest daughters, then it appears they did not leave NC until
after Mary's birth in 1816...and arrived (in Dickson Co.?) TN sometime before Lydia's birth
in 1820...

It would make sense that Wm., Burrell and Israel ETHERIDGE were brothers..., but I don't have definate proof at this time.
Besides my speculation, I do not know for sure who the parents of Lydia ETHERIDGE were, but there were a number of Etheridge families (originating in NC), that settled in middle Tennessee counties of Dickson and Humphreys Counties, TN by 1850. What little I know at
this time is my greatgrandmother was JULIA BELL ETHERIDGE, b. 9/30/1876 in
Dickson, TN, d. 6/10/1957 in Sheffield. AL. She married WILLIAM DAVID WILLIAMS
in Hickman County, TN. Just received her Death Certificate showing her father as
WILLIAM ETHERDIGE, mother unknown. She had (that I know about) 1 brother, Joe
and three sisters IDA (Runions), NELLIE (Ross) and JENNIE (Murphrey. Ida was a
twin, the other girl having died at birth. I know they moved down to Hickman
County then on to Lawrence County,and eventually to Colbert County, AL. I have
heard that there were FLOWERS and GIBBS tied into their family but do not know
how they were connected. Would like to hear from anyone that might be connected.
Janie Putman is researching the
Etheridge surname in and around Gibson County, Tennessee (west TN). She has a
large family of Etheridges who descended from John Etheridge. Janie is also
researching the Terry Family - John Edd Terry family in Gibson county in the
early 1900's.
