A very nice cousin (Eulus "Rusty" Evans) provided helpful information and forwarded some information from a book called "Descendants of Thomas and Louisa EVANS" by Descendants of Thomas and Louisa Evans, published December 1992, reprinted Nov. 1996 with minor revisions/additions.
This book is available through the Everett Horn Library in Lexington, TN.

Per Rusty Evans: "Although there are many Thomas EVANS families in the early 1820 and 1830 NC census years, presently it is thought that our Thomas and Louisa Evans lived in Bertie Co., NC.... This Thomas EVANS (of Bertie Co., NC) family seems to be the one that matches the best ages and sexes of children, etc. Also of note is that a Thomas Evans purchased 50 acres in 1827 in Bertie Co., NC and another 43 acres in 1833, same county, and sold 93 acres in Sept. 1835, same county, with no other land or morgage transactions after 1835. This tends to validate our Thomas Evans coming from Bertie Co., N.C. (Rusty mentioned that this needs more research).

Our Thomas EVANS family came to Tennessee between March 22, 1835 (when their daughter Nancy was born in NC) and August 7, 1836, (when their daughter Louisiana was born in TN). First found on the 1840 Hamilton Co., TN census, it is thought Thomas and his family lived there for 12 to 14 years. A review of Hamilton Co. deeds showed no land ownership although tax lists or a look into neighboring counties may shed more light. It is said they were sharecroppers and unless a deed is found, this can be assumed true. On Jan. 1, 1849 Thomas bought 200 acres in the 9th district of Decatur Co., TN for $400 from Wm. H. Storm. In 1850 Thomas and Louisa and most of their children were living in Decatur Co., near the Henderson Co., TN line. Their sons Augustus and Drew, stayed behind in Hamilton Co., TN but Drew followed them a year or so later, after he married. Although two of Augustus's sons, Peter and Tom, came to the Decatur/Henderson Co. area after the Civil War, Augustus remained in or near Hamilton Co. until death. Thomas died Oct. 7, 1865, near the close of the Civil War... In Henderson Co., deeds were found showing his estate was divided equally between his eleven children, with his deceased children's one-eleventh parts divided between those grandchildren.
On the 1870 census, Thomas' widow, Louisa, was found in Henderson Co., living with her daughter Louisiana, a war widow, and Louisiana's young child Mary Tom Brodie. With her widow's pension, Louisiana Evans Brodie bought out all but two of her father's heirs. Louisa lived the remaining 11 years of her life, after Thomas' death, with Louisiana..."
