The color of each state indicates how frequently you will find someone with this surname in each state. For instance, if a state is colored red, then 1 in 100 people (or more) in that state have the surname. Similarly, yellow means approximately 1 in 300 have the surname, green means 1 in 1000, and blue means 1 in 10,000 (or less).

My Greer Ancestors begin with my 5th great-grandmother Nancy Greer born Jan. 2, 1788 in Virginia; died Jan. 30, 1868 in Madison Co., TN (per her tombstone). She married John May, Sr. (1772-1843) on 6 February, 1805 in Davidson County, TN.

Nancy Greer May was the daughter of Martin and Mary Greer.
Martin Greer appeared on 1820 Tennessee Census with the following statistics: 020101-00102.
2 males age 10 to 16
1 male age 16 to 26
1 male age 45 years or older - which was Martin Greer (born abt. 1756/66).
1 female age 16 to 26
1 female age 45 or older - wife Mary (probably born before 1750).

(Thanks to a fellow Greer researcher (Celia Tate) - I now know that Martin GREER is the son of Benjamin GREER (b. Jan. 6, 1727, Baltimore, MD) and Rachel LOWE, and that he was born 1756/66 in Bedford Co., VA) and that Benjamin (b. 1727) was the son of John GREER and Sarah DAY - Thank you Celia for this Greer information!!!)

Martin GREER, (born 1756/66 in Bedford Co., VA, died July 4, 1822 in Davidson County, TN) has a will dated March 11, 1822, recorded Sept. 3, 1822, (with sons Benjamin and Joseph as Executors) mentioned wife Mary (formerly Mary Wright, dau. of Joseph/Thomas Wright and Elizabeth Kemp) and the following children:

1. Nancy Greer May, born Jan. 2, 1788, VA - who married John May, Sr. (1772-1843) in Davidson Co., TN in 1805 (Nancy and John are my ancestors...) - Nancy was probably the eldest child. She died in Madison Co., TN and her will appeared in Madison Co., TN Will Book "A", pg. 67.
2. Joseph Greer born 30 Dec. 1792 in Franklin Co., VA. He married Mary "Polly" Mitchell on 16 June 1814 in Davidson Co., TN. They were tog. from their marr. to Mary's death in 1862. Joseph d on 30 January 1871 and they are both bur. near Dover, Lafayette Co. MO. Joseph left a will in LaFayette Co., MO.; Dolores J Davis is a descendant of Joseph Greer!
3. Mary "Polly" Greer married to a Samuel Vaughan on Oct. 13, 1819 in Davidson Co., TN. Their divorce is indicated in D.B. 2, page 123, Davidson Co., TN. Her father's will mentioned her specifically as "Polly Greer" in 1822.
4. Benjamin Greer, (born March 1794; died Dec. 9, 1837), married Peggy Donnelly on May 5, 1813;
5. Green Berry Greer, born Aug. 16, 1808, married (first) Jane Hutson and (second) Elizabeth Stanley. He died in Sikeston, MO on March 29, 1852.;
6. Elizabeth Greer born between 1794 and 1804 in Davidson Co., TN and was possibly married a Mr. Anderson on August 4, 1825 in Davidson Co., TN (this info. was given to me), or possibly to George H. Burton, Aug. 4, 1825 in Davidson Co., TN - I'm just not sure at this time which marriage is correct;
7. James Wright Greer born 1802 in Davidson Co., TN died 1863 in Arkansas. (Per Dolores J. Davis - he "could have possibly died in Johnson Co., Missouri."). He married Michael Elizabeth Brown on 26 July 1826 in Williamson Co., TN. They had several children in Tenn. and Missouri.
8. William Henry Greer, born abt 1805 married Rebecca Thatcher on 22 July 1831 and had several children in Missouri.

Martin Greer appeared in land records in Davidson Co., TN on Oct. 25, 1800 when he purchased 100 acres of land from Henry Slewder in Davidson Co. on the South Harpeth River. I believe that Martin (who was born probably abt. 1756) was a son of Benjamin Greer (1726-?) and Rachel LOWE of Bedford Co., VA and Benjamin's father (John GREER (b abt 1650- d abt 1688) "The Immigrant"), was born in Dumfrieshire, Scotland abt 1650. John (b. abt 1650) married Anna TAYLOR (dau. of Arthur Taylor and Margaret Hill) in Baltimore Co., Maryland on May 4, 1710.

I was given the information on Martin Greer's ancestors by fellow researchers and have not verified this myself...
