Hornsby

From VA & NC

My Hornsby Ancestors

Unfortunately, at this time I have not found any further information (other than her name and possible birthplace), on my ancestor Angelina HORNSBY, wife of Benjamin ELLIS (1741-1796), of Warren Co. NC. The Dixie McCrary "ELLIS" book says that Benjamin Ellis' will separates his children in two categories: "my three eldest children" and the "youngest children" - and she noticed a gap of a number of years between the ages of the groups indicating that there could have been two wives..., but also noting that Stephen Ellis' mother (my ancestor) was "Angelina HORNSBY" (last paragraph of page 182), "a family tradition reported by a descendant of Benjamin's son Stephen "Angelina Hornsby ...her girlhood home was near a forest or swamp possibly in VA."

When doing a search for HORNSBY, I ran across the following marriage for an Angelina HORNSBY: Angelina HORNSBY to John LAWRENCE on June 30, 1786 in in Granville Co., N.C. I'm not sure if there is a connection or not, but we all know that sometimes those family names are continued down branches of the same family trees... (thought it "might" be a "tidbit" of a clue?). The only other HORNSBY married in that county was James HORNSBY to Elizabeth HANCOCK on Sept. 8, 1778. But, there was another Hornsby-Ellis marriage in Wake Co. NC in 1801 (see below)...

Please let me know if you find any information that would link my ancestor Angelina HORNSBY-ELLIS to any other HORNSBY line in VA or NC during the mid to late 1700's.

*I can't help but wonder how many of the Hornsby individuals (in the marriages listed above) are descendants of William HORNSBY of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk County, England, who had at least *three sons that came to Virginia. Many descendants of this line spread to NC, SC, GA, Miss. and Louisiana.

The following early Hornsby information is based on, and can be found at the site of Curtis Swan (at ancestry.com) http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:1249854&id=I58328487.
