LANIER SURNAME DISTRIBUTION IN THE U.S. (Provided by Hamrick Software)

laniermap.gif - 8.5 K

The color of each state indicates how frequently you will find someone with this surname in each state. For instance, if a state is colored red, then 1 in 100 people (or more) in that state have the surname. Similarly, yellow means approximately 1 in 500 or so have the surname, green means 1 in 1000, and blue means 1 in 10,000 (or less).

According to a Lanier book published by Louise Ingersoll, the Lanier families were French Huguenots to London, and are well recorded in the books of the Huguenot Society of London; but could not be called Huguenots to America, having been naturalized Englishmen for three generations. (However their descendants are eligible to the Huguenot Society).
The Laniers were Protestants, and left France to escape the early persecutions. Protestanism began in 1555, and the heighth of the persecutions was reached in the massacre of St. Bartholomew on the eve of Aug. 24, 1572, and more than 500,000 French Preotestants fled to England, Holland, Switzerland, and Germany.
It is said that the name Lanier is derived from the ancient French tongue, and means a Falcon. The family is of French descent, and is from the province of Gascony in southern France.
Nicholas Lanier arrived in London in 1561, and moved to East Greenwich, County Kent, where he was one of the musicians to the Queen. He married before 1565 to Lucreece. They had six sons: John, b. 1565; Alphonse; Innocent; Jerome; Clement ; and Andrea. All were musicians to the Queen and Kings; and four daughters: Ellen; Frances; Mary and Katherine, two of whom married musicians; and later eight or more grandsons became members of the Royal Orchestra. Nicholas Lanier died in 1612
Nicholas Lanier, who was in the Court of King Henry II of France, and also the Court of Queen Elizabeth, and King James of England, was the founder of the Lanier family of musicians and the ancestor of the American Laniers. It is from his son Clement Lanier (died 1661) and his wife Hannah (who died in 1653) that the Laniers of Virginia and Barbados were descended.

Clement and Hannah had eleven children:
1. Hannah Lanier, the eldest, married to Thomas Swetnam on Nov. 16, 1665
2. Nicholas Lanier.
3. Lionel Lanier.
4. William Lanier.
5. Frances Lanier.
6. Elizabeth Lanier.
7. Susannah Lanier.
8. Lucretia Lanier (died young).
9. Charles, Lanier, (died young).
10. John Lanier (born abt. Oct. 1631), married in England before coming to Virginia in abt. 1656.
11. Robert Lanier (born abt. 1642), married Rebecca Unknown and was in Barbados before 1678. Their sons were the next immigrants of this line to Virginia.

(More on the early Laniers can be found in Louise Ingersoll’s book of the The Lanier’s - I found a copy at the Macon, Ga. public library...)

My Lanier line was found in Louise Ingersoll's Lanier book, and I’ll begin with Lemuel Lanier, born abt. 1722 in Surry Co., Virginia. He moved with his parents to Brunswick Co. before 1740. He married in Brunswick Co. before 1740 to Miss Molly Peebles, daughter of Jehu and Mary Peebles. Molly died before 1761, leaving three children. He married a second time in 1761 to Elizabeth (Unknown), born abt. 1746, who survived him by 45 years, dying in June 1829, at the age of 84. She married a second time about Nov. 1788 to Lt. John France, a Revolutionary Soldier.
Lemuel Lanier bought land in the newly formed county of Pittsylvania, and in 1777, that section became Henry County. His will was dated Jan. 29, 1785 in Henry Co. and probated March 23, 1786.

Lemuel Lanier’s children by Molly Peebles were:

FELLOW LANIER RESEARCHERS...

  • 13 June 2002 - Wayne D. Lanier has a wonderful Lanier Webpage. He is primarly interested in, of course, the LANIER family, but also is researching the Southwell line. He has found a great deal of information about the Lanier surname on the net; however, he says there seems to be little, if any, about the Southwells. His grandmother was a Southwell.
Wayne also has another Lanier Family Homepage - at Lanier Family Homepage at Family Tree Maker.

  • 15 Feb 1998 - Dawn Duke (tomduke@pop.mindspring.com) is researching her great-great grandmother Mary Adeline Lanier. She was married twice, first to James (?) Clemmons. They had one son, Jim. Second marriage was to Welcome McGee of Lauderdale County, Alabama. They had four children: Welcome "Bose", Forrest, Will, and Minie. Wec, Mary Adeline's second husband served in the Confederate army. We believe Mary Adeline was born in Tennessee and that her parents names were Alfred Lanier and Nancy Macuing (a Cherokee or Choctaw Indian). We think Mary Adeline's siblings were Nancy Jane Lanier (married Wm. Warren), Martha Lanier, Wiloby Lanier, Charles McLain Lanier, Minerva Lanier, and Zach Lanier. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Dawn Duke

EVANS (WLEVANS@prodigy.net) says her husband William L Evans Jr traces his family back to Lewis Lanier who married Ann (Nancy) Bulter on Sept 21, 1778 in Sussex Co., Va. and then to Sampson Lanier and Sampson Lanier Sr. Would like any information on this line. Also, is anyone else doing research on this branch? Thanks, Linda W. Evans.

The 1880 Lafayette, Scott Co., AR, Federal Census lists her place of birth as TN, her father's place of birth as TN and her mother's place of birth as NC. She is listed as 32 years old at the time of the census which would make her born abt 1848. She may have had a sister named Laura Francis Lanier who married Sebron Harrell Jr. In a biography about Sebron Harrell, it says that Laura Francis Lanier was from Bowling Green, KY.
