RICE Ancestors

RICE SURNAME DISTRIBUTION IN THE U.S. (Provided by Hamrick Software)
The color of each state indicates how frequently you will find someone with
this surname in each state. For instance, if a state is colored red, then
1 in 100 people (or more) in that state have the surname. Similarly, yellow means approximately 1 in about 500
have the surname, green means 1 in 1000, and blue means 1 in 10,000 (or less).
My Rice ancestors... begin in Perry County, Tenn. with William RICE, the son of Thomas Rice and
Biddie (Decker) Rice. William RICE (born abt. 1787) married Sarah Dailey (b. abt. 1796), the
daughter of Wesley and S. (Mitchell) Dailey. They lived near Lobelville in
Perry County, TN.
The children of William and Sarah Dailey RICE were:
1. James Rice
2. Betsy Rice
3. Elijah Rice
4. William Rice
5. Mary Rice (born February 8, 1822 in Lobelville, Perry Co., TN), married David Jackson
Blackwell (son of Jesse and Sarah (Wilkins) Blackwell). These are my ancestors.
6. Sally Rice
7. Nancy Rice
8. Susan Rice
9. Emily Rice
TENNESSEE RICE FAMILY RESEARCHERS
24 July 1997 - Pat McDonald (patiemac@infohwy.com)
has BRASHEAR ancestors who were in Roane County, TN very early.
There were several RICE marriages along the way. Also, several Brashears later moved to Perry County.
I have the Brashears pretty good I think, but am trying to find out more about the Rice guys.
(Later in Decatur Co)
Mary Polly Rice b ca 1787 NC m Zaza Brashears, Jr. In Roane as late as 1821, was in 1836 Tax list
of District 3, Perry County, Tennessee. Also lists Bazzel Brashear, John R. brashear and Jesse A. Brashear.
(relationship not known, whether brothers, cousins, etc).
Sarah "Sally" Brashears b 1788 (cousin to Zaza) m John B. Rice, (sister
to Mary Polly Rice). They had Isaac Columbus Rice b ca 1820 who was in
1850 Decatur Co. census.
Walter Brashears b ca 1790, (brother to Sarah "Sally") m Elizabeth Roberts (a cousin). They moved to Perry County. Their son, Isaac Elias Brashears b 1824, m EHTALINDA RICE b 1827.
Phoebe Brasshear b 1768 mar2 before 1814 STEPHEN RICE. Possibly second mar. for him too. He signed petition to form Roane County in 1801. Stephen seems to be brother to JOHN, or close relative.|
I don't find any Thomas or William Rices in what little I know about these folks above, but there is a
1812 Roane County Will of John Rice, Sr. who mentions WILLIAM RICE, son of my first wife.
He has a granddau Betsy, grandson Esau. Sons John and Isaac.
Additionally, Betsy Brashear m Hugh Crumbliss/Cromby and they were in 1830 Perry Co. census
(in Lawrence Co in 1820). He died in 1840s.
Be sure to visit Pat McDonald's homepage: Roots of Roane County, TN.
Note - New e-mail address: Nov. 2000 - Jim Rice (jrice@arches.uga.edu)
is seeking siblings and parents of James Monroe RICE, born 10 Aug 1803 in TN. He married Sarah HEDRICK
in Blount Co,TN in 1828 and was in Sevier in 1830, Blount in 1840 and Knox in 1850.
By 1860, he and his entire clan had moved to Blount Co,AL. Daughter, Rebecca, published in 1893 that her
paternal grandparents were another James RICE and a Rebecca BORDEN. In the Knox Co,TN census for 1850,
the household after JMR's was that of his married daughter, Jane RICE HAUN, which included a Rebecca RICE,
age 97, born VA. Have a good bit of info on the ancestry of Sarah HEDRICK but nothing else on the RICE line. Anyone else
possibly researching these folks?
Best Regards, Jim Rice ( jrice@arches.uga.edu) - (This Query was found on Blount Co. TNGenWeb Queries
for Nov. 1996).
