robinsonmap.gif - 3.5 K

The color of each state indicates how frequently you will find someone with this surname in each state (based on 1990 census). For instance, if a state is colored red, then 1 in 100 people (or more) in that state have the surname. Similarly, yellow means approximately 1 in 500 or so have the surname, green means 1 in 1000, and blue means 1 in 10,000 (or less).

Here is some information which may lend some additional clues to the ancestry of John Robinson Sr. (d. 1784):
This is an excerpt from "Lincoln Co. NC Heritage - 1997", page 191:

"James Robinson, Sr., the first generation of this line in America, is believed to have landed at Old Charleston, S.C. from Yorkshire, England in 1670. According to the History of South Carolina by Yates Snowden (Vol., 1 pp. 195-6), a James Robinson and others gave several hundred acres of land for the founding of the town of Charleston on July 27, 1672. We have not been able to fill the gap between this James Robinson and the James Robinson who was the father to James Robinson Jr. (1725-1786) who moved from Lancaster Co., SC to Lincoln Co. NC, according to the account by G.M. Yoder, published in the Lincoln Journal, April 9, 1897: "..No doubt Henry Weidner, an acquaintance and friend of James Robinson, often told of the rich and fertile land along Henry's and Jacob's Fork Rivers that form the South Fork River. So when Henry Weidner left S.C. for his old home in NC, James Robinson came with him; and after seeing this godly and fertile 'Land of Canaan', he became at once convinced that this was a delightful country and resolved to make it his future home. So he soon entered a large boundary of land on the South Fork River, at the Rock Ford. He also had a great deal of other lands - a large tract near where Smyer's Mill is now located. These lands on the South Fork were, in 1897, owned by P. W. Whitener and others."
"He began to erect a small hut, and when it was ready, moved his family from South Carolina. His family consisted of his wife and sons, John Harvey, David Jesse and perhaps some daughters; though if any, the writer never had been informed of the facts."
"From a family bible owned by Annie Mae Robinson (Mrs. James) Woodside, Rt. 3, Newton NC, originally owned by James Robinson Jr. (1725-1786), there appears the name of James Robinson, son of James Robinson and Mary his wife who was born May 19, 1725."
"This would indicate that the James Robinson who moved to Lincoln County was James Robinson, Jr., the son of James Robinson and his wife Mary. Apparently the elder James Robinson stayed in Lancaster County. We have no further records of him."
"James Robinson Jr. was born in 1725 and died on June 1, 1786, according to the tombstone in the Robinson Cemetery on the Peter Wilfong Whitener property near Startown, NC. There is a copy of James Robinson's will filed in the office of the clerk of Superior Court of Lincoln Co. NC, in which he refers to his wife as Catherine and mentions his sons David, Jesse and John. This will is dated May 6, 1786. It was written shortly before his death."
"According to our information, the wife of David (the 2nd child of James Robinson Jr.) was Virginia or Jenny. They lived in Lincoln County; and according to Mr. Yoder, lived on the west side of the South Fork at the old Fish Dam Ford. David represented Lincoln County in the Legislature in 1795."
"David Robinson (1752-1801) and his wife Virginia had three sons and three daughters. The sons were Jesse, David and James. I do not have the names of the daughters."
