SPENCER SURNAME DISTRIBUTION IN THE U.S. (Provided by Hamrick Software)

spencermap.gif - 3.5 K

The color of each state indicates how frequently you will find someone with this surname in each state. For instance, if a state is colored red, then 1 in 100 people (or more) in that state have the surname. Similarly, yellow means approximately 1 in 500 or so have the surname, green means 1 in 1000, and blue means 1 in 10,000 (or less).

My ancestor Frederick Spencer was born in North Carolina and came to Maury County, Tenn. when he was young. He married Ellen Wheat (born about 1802 in S.C). They had these six known children:

1) John J. Spencer, born about 1831.
2) James Madison Spencer - was born in Maury County, Tenn. on November 14, 1827. He married Mary Martin Williams on Feb. 7, 1850. He died Oct. 14, 1906.
3) Marion Spencer.
4) Emily Spencer.
5) Nancy Spencer.
6) Joseph Henry Spencer who married Elizabeth J. Terry. (These are my ancestors).

Frederick and Ellen moved to Hickman County, Tenn. about 1830. Frederick died about 1837, and Ellen moved to Perry County by 1853 to live with one of her sons. She died in Perry Co. in 1870.

According to Goodspeed's History of Benton County, Tenn. , which has some information on this Spencer family, James Madison Spencer married Mary Martin Williams on Feb. 7, 1850. She was born in Smith County, Tenn. on Feb. 13, 1832, the daughter of Evan and Elizabeth (Flowers) Williams, and was the great grand-daughter of Valentine Flowers, Revolutionary War Soldier who is buried in Humphreys County, TN.

James Madison Spencer (second child of Frederick and Ellen Wheat Spencer) and his wife Mary Martin (Williams) had nine children:

1) William Evan Spencer (1850-1923), married Nora Atlantic Eveline Davidson.
2) Ellen Spencer (1854-1938) married James Henderson Cunningham.
3) Martha Jane Spencer (1856-1930), married Francis Depriest and resided in Benton Co., TN.
4) Susan Catherine Spencer, married a Mr. Ledbetter in Perry County, TN.
5) Sarah Andealer, died young.
6) James Henry Spencer (1864-1939), married Emma Cowell of Benton County, TN.
7) Josie (b. 1867) married Tom McClure and resided in Benton Co., TN.
8) John D., died young.
9) Robert W. Spencer (b. 1872) married 3 times and resided in Bruceton, TN.

Joseph Henry "Joe" Spencer (sixth child of Frederick and Ellen Wheat Spencer) was born about 1837 in Tenn. Joseph married Elizabeth J. ("Eliza" or "Betty") Terry (b. Feb. 4, 1839, TN), daughter of Edmund and Mary Terry.

Joseph Henry Spencer and Elizabeth had these children:

1) Mary J. Spencer (b. abt. 1858), married J.H. Goodman on Mar. 13, 1877 in Perry Co., TN
2) Sarah E. Spencer (b. abt. 1860). Sarah supposedly had a son out of wedlock and named her son James Monroe Spencer - who was raised by Joseph and Elizabeth (Sarah's parents) as one of their own. Fred Greenway says he got this information from a grandson of James Monroe Spencer. Sarah later married Wesley Wheat (3-8-1886) who was listed at 17 in the 1880 census.
3) Josephine Spencer (b. abt. 1862) - was not found on 1880 census - perhaps she was married by then or died young?
4) Alice Spencer (b. abt. 1862-64) - appeared on 1880 census as age 18; Alice married M.C. Welch on Jan. 3, 1881 in Perry Co., TN
5) Nancy Spencer (b. abt. 1864) was the second wife of Fred Greenway's great-grandfather John W. "Guid" DANIEL.
6) Susan E. Spencer (b. abt. 1868). If her middle initial is indeed "E." then she married W.R.D. CARNELL on Aug. 7, 1889.
7) William Thomas Spencer (b. October 1869), married Ethel Mae Lott on Dec. 15, 1894 in Linden, Perry Co., TN. Ethel Mae Lott was the daughter of Franclin C. Lott and Julia Ann Aulford. (See photo of Wm. T. and Ethel Lott SPENCER below - they were my GG Grandparents).
8) James D. Spencer (b. abt. 1872; d. 1957) buried in Nix Cem. on Roan's Creek. He married Dena DANIEL, daughter of John W. DANIEL (mentioned above as husband to Nancy Spencer b. abt 1864). Dena DANIEL had several sisters - one named Dollie married James Monroe Spencer on April 30, 1900.
James D. called himself "D" or "Dee" and sometimes went by the name of W.D. - Fred Greenway said he remembers James D. and says he looks a lot like his brother William Thomas Spencer (pictured below) - and said that Dee had a large handlebar mustache.
9) Wesley Spencer - b. 1880, Perry Co. census is shown as age 4/12.
10) William "G." Spencer? may fit into this family somehow... I'm just not sure...

My grandfather was Nelson Walker Spencer who was born in 1884 in Savannah, TN. His parents were Eliza Jane Eoff and William Joseph Spencer, both also born in Savannah. I have Eliza's family going back to 1589, but I don't know much about William's family after that. I know William's parents were Thomas Sharpe Spencer and Margaret Orr.

  • 27 Apr 1997 - Bernie Cinkoske appeared on the Bedford Co., VAGenWeb page with the following Query on August 25, 1996:
DAVID, SPENCER - I am looking for any information on the family/ancestors/descendants of Charles Spencer who had a Public Service Claim in Bedford Co. and Campbell Co., VA for goods supplied for the Revolutionary War. He is supposed to have been born about 1750 and married to a Judith David with 11 children. Several of his children were married in Campbell Co., VA which would have been a part of Bedford Co., VA at the time they were born.

  • 16 Apr 1997 - Martha F. Ballard has a grandmother Mary Frances Pond who was a Spencer descendant. Her father, Joseph Marion "Maide" Pond b. 23, May 1837 in McNairy Co. TN. He was the son of John M. Pond and Isabella Spencer. I don't have dates for them. If you run across her name connected to a Spencer family, I would like to know about them. Thanks.

  • 13 Apr 1997 - Barbara Shelhart of NW Indiana is also a descendant of Fredrick and Ellen Wheat Spencer. Through their son James Madison Spencer and Mary Margaret Williams!

  • 11 Apr 1997 - Deb Juhlin is researching West Tennessee Spencers.
(Update 23 June 1997) - my GGGrandfather, William C. Spencer was married to Mary Louisa Watt. William C. Spencer's parents were William J. Spencer (son of Benjamin Spencer) and Elizabeth Spencer (daughter of John Spencer), tying in to Darrell Spencer's lineage. So far, all but maybe 2 Spencers buried in Hopewell Cemetery, have fit into the family tree.

(11 Apr 1997) - Deb's G-Grandfather was Watt Spencer (1867-1940) married to Matilda (Tildie) Pierce (1870-1948). William C. and Mary L. Spencer are parents of Watt Spencer. She said she believes that Watt was one of at least 3 sons. Watt & Tildie had at least 8 children. Deb's Grandfather's name was Robert Lee Spencer (1899-1969). Robert Lee Spencer and Ruth Luckey Spencer had 4 children. Deb was told that her Great-Grandfather's mother was a Watt, and there are numerous Watts at Hopewell Cemetery where Watt and Matilda Spencer are buried.
However, there were a number of Spencers that at this point I cannot connect to my family, but maybe someone else can ...
Deb has generously provided the information on Spencer's that are buried in the Hopewell Cemetery - which is located near Medina, TN (in west TN) listed above. Thanks Deb!

Deb also has the following information:
Deb's known Spencer family members who are buried at Hopewell Cemetery near Medina, Tennessee are:
    Watt Spencer 1867-1940
    Matilda Pierce Spencer 1870-1948
    Robert Lee Spencer 1899 - 1969
    Ruth Luckey Spencer 1892-1974
    Walter Spencer 2/23/1891 - 9/1/1968
    and then there is also:
    Maude Spencer Waller 5/19/1879 - 12/4/1965
    John Bell Waller 11/12/1872 - 3/24/1963
Deb is also interested in finding the Vance and Oliver ties to her Spencer family.

  • Elizabeth Spencer of Burbank, Calif. is a 4th great-granddaughter of Frederick Spencer (a distant cousin of my Spencer line!) She is a descendant through Frederick's son James Madison Spencer!

Helen Chapman is a descendant of Elijah Spencer (1774-1843) in Montgomery Co., NC. This Elijah had son William M. Spencer (1795-1848) who moved to Henderson Co. TN for some years before moving on to Texas. That seems to be a path that many of the Spencers and Callicutts followed. If you have any info. on her Spencer line please contact her!

  • Another contact for Perry Co., TN Spencers is Fred K. Greenway (NOTE NEW E-MAIL ADDRESS - 23 JUNE 1997). He can be reached via e-mail at: greenway@x2.alliance.net, or by snail mail at: 10451 Twin Lake Rd. N.E., Mancelona, MI.
Fred is is researching his mother's line: Gussie Dena Spencer. Her father was Henry Alfred Spencer and his father was W. D. Spencer (b.abt 1875). (He called himself Dee). They lived and died on Roans Creek in Perry County and are buried in Nix Cemetery.

John W. Daniel (Guid)'s first wife was Nancy Parsaid Claiborne (Clayborn). Ardena (Dena) (my great grandmother) married James D Spencer. The second child was Dolly who married James Monroe (called Monroe). Monroe is younger than Dee but were raised as brothers. There were a couple of other children (hearsay),but I'm not sure who they are yet. Guids second wife, Nancy Spencer, James D.'s sister was Dena's step mother and became her sister-in-law. Dena referred to her as "Ol Nance". Guids and Nancy had six more children. Robert T. Daniel (b. 1889), William Harrison Daniel (b 1890), John D. Daniel (b. 1892), Robbie Leoda Daniel (female b. 1893), Hattie Daniel (b. 1895), Mytle Daniel (b 1898). The Daniel family is a large one and some of them married distant cousins.
