The following information on the origin of the Stegall surname was provided by: Joycepb@aol.com (A descendent of Bird Stegall).
After considerable research, I have found that the name "Stegall" is Anglo-Saxon (and therefore Germanic), traditionally from East Anglia, particularly Norfolk with some occurrences in Suffolk. There are many variants in spelling, including Stegol, Steagle, Stiggle, Stiggles, Stagold, Stickle, Stickles, and even Style and Styles. In one dictionary of English surnames, "Stegall" is listed as a variant of "Styles", as in this example: "Styles - Topographic name for someone who lived near a steep ascent. OE Stigol (a derivation of stigan - to climb, or OE Stigel - a man who lived near a stile). Vars. Stile, Stiles, Stiggle, Steggall, Steckle, Steckles." Another source essentially agrees: both "Styles" and "Stegall" evolved from Old English Stigol or Steogol, a derivative of stigan, "to climb", or from Old English Stige meaning "a man who lived near a stile", or "dweller by the stile or steep ascent". The name "Stegall" in its various forms and the word "stile" are historically and linguistically related to the German names Stiegel, Sti(e)gler, Stiegelmeyer, and Stegelman and also to the modern German word Stiege meaning "staircase," and the modern verb steigen meaning "to climb, to ascend." (By the way, a "stile" was not made of wood as it is today, but denoted a place to climb over the large embankments of mud and dirt that marked the boundaries of property: toeholds or footholds were carved into the dirt at an angle, and this passage over the embankment was called a "stile." Thus the stile was always "a steep ascent.") In this country, as in England, the spelling of "Stegall" has had many forms. Apparently the first immmigrant to this country with the name spelled it "Steggall", but today the most common spellings are "Stegall", "Stiegall", "Steagal"; in the United States "Stegall" is the most common. Because of the similarity of this name to some German names, it is quite possible that German immigrants with names like those previously mentioned may now be known as "Stegall."
Several people with variants of the name Stegall have found their way into historical records, including Reginald atte Stighel - 1227, William de Stile - 1229, Richard de Stigele, Robert de la Stiele - 1275, Roger Attestichell - 1305, Edmond Stegyll (or Stekyll), and Richard Stegold - 1524, many of these names showing obvious Norman-French changes.
Footnotes:
Hanks, Patricia and Flavis Hodges. A Dictionary of Surnames, p. 517.
For those of you who are interested in linguistics, the normal development of the name from the Old English "Stigol" or "Steogol" would be to "Stile" or "Style", but in surnames, "Stigele" became "Stigle" and the continuant "g" became a stopped "g", hence "Stiggle". And often "gl" is interchanged with "cl", hence "Stickle". Middle English "Stegele" is from Old English "Steogol" and similarly developed to "Stiggle" and "Steckle".
Dictionaries that specify this meaning are: Reaney, Hanks and Hodges, and others.
The "Steddall" who came in 1637 is assumed to be "Steggall" until research proves otherwise.
Reaney, P.H., op cit.
William Steggall (born 1609) sailed on the Plaine J(o)aane from London,
England on May 16, 1635. His son was Samuel Stegall (Sr.) (born abt. 1645).
His wife was named Jane.
Samuel (Sr.) and Jane had a son named Samuel Stegall, Jr. (born abt. 1698).
Samuel Stegall, Jr. was baptized March 26, 1699. (Information found in the Vestry
Book of the St. Peters Parish (Episcopal Church) New Kent and Jane City Counties,
of Virginia).
Note - there seems to be one or more generations not listed between
Samuel Stegall, Jr. and Richard Stegall (b. 7-4-1754), it is most likely
that one generation is George STEGALL and wife Agnes BOTTOM (parents of
Richard Stegall?) (see below).
Richard Stegall (born 4 July 1754; died 28 July 1836) lived in Lunenburg and Mecklenburg Counties of Virginia and moved to Montgomery Co., VA in 1784. In 1791 he was residing near Greenville, S.C., and bought land there in 1793 and 1798.
Richard married possibly three times:
There has been some speculation about the order of Richard's three wives - but one thing is known for sure, and that is that his 3rd and last wife was Margaret DAVIS, whom he married about 1813.
Per Calvin McLemore: Richard's first wife was most likely Peggy, (Unknown maiden name), who was the mother of Richard's first son Benjamin, she may have also been the mother of daughter Patsy (or perhaps Richard's 2nd wife was Patsy's mother).
Per Calvin McLemore: Richard's second wife was most likely the mother of Henceley, in order to explain his unusual given name, I am proposing Betsy Henceley as the 2nd wife of Richard. She was most likely the mother of Nancy, Henceley, Kelly Greern, Spencer, Linny, Blackwell and Bird, "and possibly Patsy".
Per Calvin McLemore: 3rd and last wife of Richard Stegall was Margaret DAVIS. Margaret Davis was born 1801 and seems to be in the picture from the mid 1810's through 1850. She was age 16-26 in 1820 Pendleton Dist. with husband Richard. Margaret was 30-40 in 1830 Pickens with Richard, 40-50 in 1840 Roane Co., TN with Abel Williams. Margaret was age 49 in 1840 Roane Co., TN Census with Susan Williams. Margaret Davis Stegall is most probably the mother of Susan and Richard Artemus, although the age spread of 12 years between Margaret and Susan needs to be resolved.
Richard was found on 1820 and 1830 census and on March 1831 sold his land in Pickens Co. SC to his children. In Oct. 1836 his estate was being settled. These two sets of court actions provide lists of his children and some grandchildren. His wives are addressed after his children.
SOME OF THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WAS GIVEN TO ME BY FELLOW STEGALL RESEARCHERS JOHN STEGALL OF SANDY HOOK, KY. (HIS ADDRESS APPEARS AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE), CARLTON MEASELS OF DESHA, AR. (LINK BELOW), Norma Miller, Calvin McLemore (and others where noted):
This Stegall family "may have" originated in England.
This known Stegall family begins with George Stegall, Jr. (born ca. 1733) and his wife
Agnes Bottom. They had at least two "known" sons: Richard Stegall (born July 4, 1754)
and Bottom Stegall (LIZ2558@aol.com, has info. on Bottom's son George Stigall whose branch left VA to KY); and another possible child of George Jr. and Agnes Bottom was Aaron Stegall, (b. ca. 1754), who is said to have married Mary Ann MIZE (daughter of Stephen and Avis (Wray) MIZE), and possibly there was another son named John Stegall (b. 1758, VA; died 1838, NC) who married Susannah Short Bennenfield (b. 1761, d. 1873 VA) -
(Note: Updated Email address March 2007) Georgie Stegall (old email was: GEStegall@chicago.avenew.com; new email gstegall@sbcglobal.net) provided the following information on John's children
(there were possibly many more):
1. Frederick Stegall (b. 1788 VA, d. 1869 IL). He married Sarah
Susannah Warren (b. 1792 VA, d. 1869 IL). They had the following
children: Solomon (b. 1812 OH, d. 1899 IL), Susannah (b. 1814 OH, d.
1905 IL), Nelson (b. 1816 OH, d 1892 IL), Polly Ann Stegall (b 1821 OH),
Ambrose (b 1824 OH, d. 1875 IL), Fred (b. 1827 OH, d 1896 IL), and Sarah
Jane (1829 OH, 1898 IL).
2. Thomas Jones Stegall (b. 1792) twin
3. John Bayley Stegall (b. 1792) twin. He married Ulah Short.
4. Mary Ann Stegall (b. 1796).
5. Wiley Short Stegall (b. 1801 NC, d. 1850 IL). He married Rachel
Spade. Amongst other children that are unknown, he had a son Wiley Wyatt
S. Stegall (b. 1820 OH, d. 1904 IL).
Richard Stegall, (son of George Jr. and Agnes Bottom Stegall) was born July 4, 1754 in Brunswick Co.?, VA (Note: there may be some questions about wives... but new info. has been added where noted by Cal McLemore...) possibly married first to Peggy Unknown, married 2nd about 1785 to Betsy Henceley, and definately married (a third time) to Margaret Davis. (Margaret was named as widow in when his will was "filed" but does not mention her before then...).
The following was provided by Norma Miller (Thank you Norma!)
Richard Stegall's S.C. Will, dated 16 March 1831, and found in Pack 90, Clerk of Courts Office, Pickens Co., S.C. mentions the following eleven children:
Bird, Spencer, Blackwell, Linny Yancy (2 ch: Elizabeth and Baylis Yancy), Artemus, Susan, Benjamin, Kelly, Nancy, Patsy Denny and five children of his son Hensly Stegall, deceased.. He does not mention a wife. When the will was filed, it mentioned widow, Margaret and nine children to wit, Benjamin, Patsy Denny, Nancy, Kelly, Birdwell, Blackwell, Linny Yancy, Richard A. Stegall, Susan Williams and two children deceased, Hensly and Spencer Stegall. Spencer Stegall died leaving a widow Sarah Stegall and seven children to wit: Hensly, William, Robert, Peter, Elizabeth and two other names unknown. Richard Stegall, Senr. was helpless about 11 years before his death and could not walk.
Benjamin Stegall appointed Kelly Green Stegall his lawful attorney in matters of his father's estate. Kelly Green Stegall assigned those rights to John Bowen. Margaret Stegall appointed William Holcombe as her attorney. Nancy Stegall, Lumpkin Co., GA, appointed her son, George W. Stegall as her lawful agent. George W. Stegall assigned rights to John Bowen. Richard A. Stegall and Abel Williams appointed John Bowen their lawful attorney.
ELEVEN "KNOWN" CHILDREN OF RICHARD STEGALL:
1. Benjamin Stegall - born 1776, VA.
Benjamin Stegall and his brother Kelly both married at Huntsville, Madison, Co, AL which was the Mississippi Territory at that time. (In 1811 Benjamin appeared in index for Madison Co. AL pre-statehood index). 1830 Census info.: Madison Co., AL was age 50-60). Afterwards, Benjamin lived Lauderdale Co, AL (Census info: Lauderdale Co., AL age 60-70). Benjamin died after the 1850 census sometime between 1850-1860. In 1850 he gave his age as 74 (?) and place of birth as Virginia.
Benjamin Stegall md 1st Patsy McFarland 4/6/1812 MS Territory (Huntsville, AL), and md 2nd Nancy Tripton 1/19/1829 in Lauderdale Co, AL. Nancy Tripton Stegall was living with her son Edwin G.B. and his wife Amanda during the 1860 census.
Benjamin had the following children: Kelly b.c.1816 TN married Elizabeth Latey in
Lawrence Co, AL; William b.c.1821 TN; Joanna b.c.1825 AL md a Hines; Edwin G.B. b.c.1832 AL md Amanda (last name unknown); and Sarah Rebecca b.c.1835 TN md McKinney Oldham in Lauderdale Co, AL. These children are named in Estate Settlement papers after Nancy's death.
(Info. provided by Norma Miller and some info. provided by Cal McLemore (July '97)
(Cal McLemore notes: There is a very large gap between Benjamin (b. 1776) and Nancy or Henceley (1784) which raises several thoughts. (A) This Benjamin is not the "correct" Benjamin. However this Benjamin and his brother Kelly Green seem to have moved about together. So for now it appears that the gap in births is real. (B) Benjamin and Nancy had the same mother and we have not yet uncovered the siblings between them. But if they survived to adulthood, they would be included in Richard's land sale and estate settlement. So this is not a very likely possibility. (C) Benjamin and Nancy had the same mother and the children in between them died (possible). (D) Benjamin could be from a first wife and Nancy from a 2nd wife (also possible).
2. Patsy Stegall married a Denny before her father's land sale in March 1831 (from Cal McLemore). (no other info.)
3. Nancy Stegall (info. provided by Cal McLemore) - born 1784-1790 (15-26 in 1810 Pendleton Dist.; 26-45 in 1820 Pendleton (listed with 2 children less than 10 yrs. old); 40-50 in 1830 Pickens (listed with 2 additional children age 5-10); 50-60 in 1840 Lumpkin Co. GA with son George(who was born 1819 - according to the 1850 census). Probably died before 1850 since she is not with son George on 1850 Census, but since George is single and living with other singles, she could be elsewhere. She is listed as "Nancy Stegall" in her father's 1836 estate settlement. So either she married a Stegall between 1810-1820 who died before 1820, or she never married...although she appeared in 1830 with two additional children ages 5 to 10.
4. Henceley Stegall (b. 1784-1794; d. 1826, S.C.) appeared with his father in 1810 census age 16-26 and was age 26 - 45 in 1820 Pendleton census.
According to Cal McLemore, Henceley Stegall had five "illegitimate children according to his father's estate settlement documents file 3 Oct. 1836 in Pickens Co. SC. He died before 10 July 1826 when his will was filed in Anderson Co. SC. His will mentions Fanny Holeman as woman he now lives with and the children he had by her were: Spencer, Caroline, Mary, Elizabeth and William Warren Stegall (more details below).
Fanny Holeman was listed on 1820 census as being born before 1775 (making her substantially older than Henceley - she may have remarried or moved on).
Henceley and Fanny Holeman Stegall had five "known" children in Pickens Co.
, S.C.: (1) Spencer Stegall (b. 1810) who married Mary Ann Couch; (2) Caroline Stegall
(who married a Payne); (3) Mary (or Caroline?) Stegall (who married a Grant, a lawyer);
(4) Elizabeth "Betty" Stegall (who married a Sutterfield); and (5) William Warren Stegall.
My husband's line begins with Spencer who married Mary Ann Couch about 1835
in Pickens Co., S.C.
5. Kelly Green Stegall (also possibly seen as Thelly and/or Terrell?) was born 1790 (appeared with father (40-50) and Kelly was age 16-26 in 1810 Pendleton census). Kelly lived in Mississippi Territory, Limestone Co, AL, Madison Co, AL, Lauderdale Co, AL and, apparently, Lincoln Co, TN. Norma Miller is a descendant of Kelly Stegall - and provided this information on Kelly and Benjamin! (Thank you Norma!)
Also Cal McLemore is a descendant of Kelly Green Stegall through his daughter Mary, (b. 1812, TN), and would like to know more about him - if anyone has any info. on where Kelly was in 1850 (death or moved?) please contact Cal!
"Kelly and Benjamin Stegall both married at Huntsville, Madison, Co, AL (which was the Mississippi Territory at that time). Afterwards, Kelly's brother Benjamin lived Lauderdale Co, AL. Benjamin died after the 1850 census. Benjamin gave his age as 74 and place of birth as Virginia.
Kelly Green Stegall married Nancy Wilbourn Jan 13, 1810 and divorced her Aug 10, 1827 (Divorce Petitions, Acts of 1826-1827, Limestone County, AL). Known children were Mary and Richard. He later married Frances Bethany. I've been told that other children of Kelly's were Sarah Rebecca, Edwin, William and Iona.
Kelly is not listed in any census that I can find in 1850, so I assume that
he died before that census."
Kelly Green Stegall had children, Mary b.c. 1812 who married Briggs McLemore 9/18/1832 in Lauderdale Co, AL, and Richard. He may have had other children that I'm not aware of - these children were mentioned in a guardianship bond in Limestone Co, AL.
6. Spencer Stegall, was born about 1794. He appeared as age 16-26 in 1810 Pendleton District census with father as head of household. Spencer also appeared in 1820 Pendleton Dist. census as head of household age 16-26; 1830 Gwinnett Co. GA Census age 30-40.
Spencer Stegall married Sallie Conger (b. abt. 1794-1800). (per Cal McLemore: Spencer was alive for his father's 1831 land sale, but deceased by the Oct. 1836 filing of his father's estate settlement, and in 1840 Sarah was listed as Head of Household with a daughter age 0-5. So Spencer probably died about 1834-36. Had 7 children listed in father's estate settlement as Hensly, William, Robert, Peter, Elizabeth ("Betsy"), and 2 others - twins Narcissa and Margret).
Per Cal McLemore: The census records for 1820, 1830, and 1840 list only three sons all born 1810-1820 - the fourth son is not listed anywhere. However, a total of 7 children (3 males, and 4 females) can be inferred from the census. Could Hensly be a female?? Seems doubtful, but something doesn't work here...
7. Linny (Lindy/Malinda?) Stegall - located on 1810 Pendleton Dist. census with Richard as a 10 - 16 year old female (but it could be Linny or Patsy).
From information found in Richard Stegall's will, Linny married Miles Yancy and had two children by 1831: Elizabeth and Baylis Yancy.
Per Cal McLemore: The transcript of her father's land sale of 1831 states that "The share for Linny Yancy to go to Bird and Blackwell Stegall in trust for her two children to wit: Elizabeth Yancy and Baylis Yancy. Said property not subject to any debt of hers or of her husband or future husband she may have." Cal speculates that Linny may not have been on good terms with her husband or possibly separated from him. Richard may have been conveying the property in trust to her to ensure that the resolution of her domestic situation would not affect her title to her property. If she had left Miles before 1830, then the 1830, 1840 census entries for Miles Yancy could be another wife. These entries show a wife named Catherine 1810, S.C. Thomas 1835, SC and Andrew 1837, SC. In 1830 Miles and Catherine had no children and perhaps were not married (since the land sale was in 1831 and Linny seemed to still be married, perhaps this unclear situation is the cause of the unusual wording in the land sale? This also would indicate that Linny had two children in 1822 and none between 1822 and 1831, which also seems strange. However, if Miles and Linny were separated shortly after 1822, but maybe still legally married in 1831, then it could be explained.
Per Cal McLemore: Another scenario for Linny could be that she was married to a Dabner Yancy instead of Miles which results in the following: Born 1794-1800 (10-16 in Pendleton SC with father, 30-40 in 1830 Pickens Co. SC with Dabner, 40-50 in 1840 Pickens Co SC with Dabner). In the 1830 Pickens census, Dabner Yancy had six children listed - including a male and female that match the 1822 birthdates for Elizabeth and Baylis. Since Richard's land sale specifically mentions 2 children, it may be that the other children listed with Dabney are not by Linny. However, since there are children both born before and after Elizabeth and Baylis in 1822, this scenario seems unlikely. Unfortunately Cal says he has been unable to locate Dabner in 1850 or later which could prove his wife's name.
NOTE - In 1850 Lumpkin Co. GA, a William Booth and his wife Eliza (age 28, born SC) have children and a Baylis Yancy (age 28, SC) listed with them. From this it appears that Elizabeth and Baylis are twins b. 1822, SC. Cal says he has been unable to positively locate Linny herself anywhere in the census.
8. Blackwell Stegall (b. abt 1797; d. 1860): appeared as age 10-16 in 1810 Pendleton with father; age 16-26 in 1820 Pendleton Dist. as head of household; 30-40 in 1830 Pickens Co.; 40-50 in 1840 Lumpkin Co., GA and age 53 in Cass Co., GA census).
Blackwell married Sally Chargal. Blackwell was named for family friends in Lunenburg Co., VA. In 1839 Blackwell and Sally moved to Dalonega, GA in 1839, where he died in 1860. He was originally buried in Bartow County, GA and his remains were removed to some place in Tennessee by relatives when Allatoona Lake was formed.
Blackwell and Sally STEGALL had these "known" ten children:
(1) Emsley Stegall (b. 1812, S.C.; d. 1888) who married Sarah Allen Lackey
(1806-1897). Their
children were Robert, John Patterson, Wallace and Mary.
(2) John Stegall, (b. 1820 in Spartanburg, S.C.) who married Elizabeth
Fitzsimmons (1828-1898). Believed to have gone with his brother Henceley to Calif.
to mine gold in 1852. He returned to GA (Cherokee/Pickens Co., GA) and
raised a family. Their children were: Saphronia "Gallie", Charlotte, John
Henry, Andrew, Mary, Sarah Elizabeth "Babe", Charles Elyer, Cicero "Sid", and
Martha Jane Stegall. John and Elizabeth Fitzsimmons Stegall are buried in the Long Swamp Cemetery in Pickens Co., GA
near Marblehill, GA.
(3) Henceley Stegall (d. 1882) who married
Cannie (Carmi?) Winterstein.
Henceley is said to have gone with his brother John to California to
mine gold in 1852. He died at Woodland, Calif. (There is no record of them
of them ever having children).
(4) Patsy "Martha"? Stegall (who married 1st to Henceley
Stegall (a cousin), married 2nd to James M. Brooks on 18 August 1840.
(5) Mary Stegall, married a Harry Thomas.
(6)Margaret Stegall, married Ross Lawhorn (Editor of the Dalonega (GA) Signal.
(7) Harriet Stegall, married Riley Payne.
(8) Sallie Stegall, married Fleming Cox who worked for the Western and
A Atlantic R.R. He was the fireman on the Locomotive "Texas" which pursued
the Great Locomotive Chase when it was stolen by Andrew's Raiders during
the Civil War. He died about 1900 in Macon, GA. They had a daughter Susie
who married a man named Norman.
(9) Jane Stegall (twin-b. 11 June 1837; died 11 March 1923),
married but do not have name of her spouse.
(10) Tandy Stegall (twin-b. 11 June 1837; died in Atlanta), joined the Confederate
Army on 10 Aug. 1861 as a Private. He was wounded at Fredericksburg, VA on
13 Dec. 1862, causing the amputation of a leg. He was captured at Marietta,
GA on 22 June 1864 and was put on unlimited furlough on 28 Feb. 1865.
married a Miss Carmichael (no children are known of this marriage).
Tandy died in Atlanta soon after the war.
Richard Stegall (b. 4 July 1754) and second wife Peggy Gillespie had the following children together:
9. Byrd Stegall (b. abt. 1799 in S.C.):
Per Cal McLemore: Byrd Stegall appeared as ag 10-16 in Pendleton Dist. with his father; 16-26 in 1820 Pendleton Dist. as head of household; 30-40 in 1830 Pickens Co. SC; 40-50 in 1840 Gwinnett Co., GA; 1850 Cobb Co., GA Census lists his ("Bira") age as 51; Abergell age 46; Nancy age 13; and Narcissa age 11.
Byrd Stegall married Abbey Conger (possible dau. of Benjamin Conger who was next door to Byrd and Abbey in 1840 Gwinnett Co. GA census). They moved to Georgia, where he supposedly operated a distillery.
They had these "known" children: (1) Richard; (2) Susan; (3) Annie;
(4) Millie (5) Eliza, who married Charles Elyea (Calvin McLemore adds: "In 1850 Cobb Co. GA census a Charles Ellier and wife Eliza, age 25?, are listed and a Mary Stegall (age 70, b. SC) is also listed with them - can anyone identify who this Mary is?"); (6) Henceley and
(7) Frank Stegall. I have no further info. on these children at this time.
NOTE***(I HAVE FOUND SOME CONFLICTING INFO. ON THE SEVEN CHILDREN LISTED ABOVE). UNTIL THE MATTER IS CLARIFIED, PLEASE DON'T ASSUME THIS IS CORRECT!
10. Susan Stegall - per Calvin McLemore: was born 1813. She was listed as age 0-10 in Pendleton with father, 10-15 in 1830 Pickens with father, 20-30 in 1840 Roane TN with husband Abel Williams. She was 37 in 1850 Roane Co., TN as head of household. In her father's 1831 land sale, she is listed as Susan Stegall, and in his 1836 estate settlement she is listed as Susan Williams. In 1838, Abel Williams and Richard A. Stegall as heirs of Richard Stegall, deceased, appointed John Bowen as their attorney. So between 1831 and 1836 Susan married Abel Williams. Based on the ages of their children on the census, I think they married about 1834, but it could have been a year or two earlier. In 1850 Susan is the head of household with a young son named Abbe born 1848, so I assume Susan's husband Abel died about 1848-50. Note that Margaret Davis Stegall, the third wife of Susan's father Richard, is with Susan in Roane Co., TN in 1840 and 1850. However, if their reported ages in 1850 are correct, (Susan 37 and Margaret 49), Susan cannot be the daughter of Margaret. However the 1820 census seems to indicate that Richard and a new wife (Margaret Davis) are starting a new family (which would be Susan and Richard Artemus). Cal asks: "Does anyone have any 1860 info. on either of them to check on their age difference?"
11. Richard "Aretmus" Stegall born 3 Jan. 1814; died 3 March 1866.
Cal McLemore notes: He appeared as age 0-10 in 1820 Pendleton Dist. with father; 15-20 in 1830 Pickens with father; 20-30 in 1840 Roane Co., TN as head of household. I can not locate him on 1850 or 1860 census - has anyone found him then?
Richard "Artemus" Stegall was mentioned in his father's 1831 land sale as "Artemus" and in his father's 1836 estate settlement as "Richard A. Stegall". He was mentioned in father's will as "Artemus".
He married 1st to Suzanna Roberts (b. 1825) - they had no children.
Richard "Artemus" married a second time to Elizabeth Roberts (b. 1812, d. 1890) and had
the following children with her: Micha Sellars, Richard Artemas, William
Green, Sidney Roberts and Charles Elyeas STEGALL.
There is slight "possibly" that Richard Stegall (b. 1754) may have had another son named Farrow. Farrow's children were George and Thomas. I can not locate where Farrow's information came from (at this time) and he was not mentioned in Richard's will - so please do not assume this is Richard's child (yet). Just thought I'd mention the name in case anyone comes across this name and might know the connection...???
1900 census for Jackson County Arkansas shows them with 3 children:
Melzie Melton b. 1879 (my great grandfather); Cora A. b. 1883; Pearl P. b. 1887
Melzie Melton Stegall m. Virgie Bruton (her parents were David Pettit Bruton and Martha Jane Prince). Their children were: M.L., Vera, Margie, Ethel, Juanita and Perry b. September 12, 1908 d. 1978 (my grandfather).
Family history says that my Stegalls immigrated from Germany at some point in time.....
I also was told that somewhere in Arkansas there once was a town named
Stegall, named for my ancestors. I have no idea if this town is still in
existence. I would appreciate any information on this line!
Thanks! Carissa, arcarrie@aol.com

* Incorrectly carried in the records as Alta Jane Brown
There were four boys and one girl born of this last "marriage". Walter died in 1950/1951 and Alta Jane Stigall later married my father, Roy Emerson Hancock (in 1953).
Any information that we can swap could be useful to our efforts. I should point out that I am working with my sister Laura Thelma (Stigall) Lorton, and a couple of cousins, Emma Jeane (Stigall) Reedy, Tina Marie Fishell (Dkbtmf@aol.com) and Pat (Maddox) Young (Vellepy@aol.com) and we are common only down to the 11th level. The 12th level, shown above, is particular to my sister and I.
Many Thanks, Russell & Robin Stegall Laird, Mt. Vernon, TX
I descended from the Moses Stegall of Anson/Union Co. NC, through son Jeremiah Green who moved to MS in early 1830s.
Recently, I visited Suffolk Co. England and searched through old parish records in the Record Office at Bury St Edmunds. I was encouraged to go there by finding from LDS info that there was a sizable concentration of the family in Suffolk from as early as the 1500s. I did not find my Moses, or anyone who I could connect to him, but I did find several Moses Stegalls there in late 1600s and early 1700s.
I would be willing to share information with others interested in our English roots.

Cornelia B. Holland
is researching Edward and Martha Bobbitt Steagall Franklin Co. NC c.
1820. Their sons were Thomas Turner Steagall and Henry Farrah
Steagall. Martha Bobbitt was the dau. of Turner and Elizabeth Bowden
Bobbitt. Elizabeth Bowden was the dau. of John and Judith Farrah
Bowden. Have been unable to learn anything about the ancestry of
Edward Steagall.
Henry Farrah Steagall mar. Delia Peck dau. of John and Temperance
Crawford Peck of Weakley Co. TN c. 1850. He moved to Gonzolas Co. TX
c. 1852 and to Santa Barbara, Brazil 1868. I am helping Thomas
Steagall of Santa Barbara, Brazil research his family on this side of
the equator. I am not related to the Steagall, but Thomas and I have
a common ancestor in Lazarus Crawford, the father of Temperance
Crawford Thompson Peck.
Would appreciate any suggestions you can provide as to ancestry of
Edward Steagall. Thomas of Brazil said Edward Steagall was born in Halifax Co. NC, but I don't know if that was from family lore or if someone had told him that recently... Also, the family in Brazil lost touch with Thomas Turner Steagall's family. Letters written after the Civil War indicate he was a merchant in New Orleans. They would like to resume contact with his
ancestors.
Littleberry Roberts:
Roane books show that he sold land....... to RICHARD A. STEGALL in
1840. Littleberry's daughter, Elizabeth (1813) married (12/2/1834)
Richard A. Stegall (1814) who was a wealthy slave holder and land owner
on Riley's Creek south of the TN. River. [names children].
Littleberry Roberts, Sr. was a native of SC. He married Susan Davis
(1787) who was d/o SURRY DAVIS, RWS, who died in Roane Co. TN in
1819. Littleberry was on Roane Tax rolls as early as 1822.
June also has a webpage at: http://bryn.ffyl.home.att.net/bryn.ffyl.html
- Her book has information on 18th century Stegall families.
Note: June Banks Evans doesn't mention my Richard Steagall (b. 1754)
anywhere in the genealogy. It is very possible that our lines are related,
but I don't believe I have enough information at this time make a
clear connection. There are so many similar repetitive names - "maybe" with everyone's
help, we can figure this out!
In June Bank Evans' book, she says that there were two George Steagalls, father and son.
George Sr. (b. ca 1700) married Mary Bottom (dau. of Thomas Bottom of
Amelia).
George Sr. moved to Brunswick Co. VA about 1755, and died in Lunenburg Co., VA.
George and Mary Bottom STEGALL had seven children:
1. George Jr. (b. ca 1733) who married Agnes "Unknown" about 1753 and moved to Brunswick Co., VA abt. 1760. Their children were: Aaron, b. ca. 1754, who is said to have married Mary Ann MIZE, daughter of Stephen and Avis (Wray) MIZE; and John, b. 7 July 1758, who married Susannah (Short) Bennenfield (dau. of Jacob Short and widow of Thomas Bennenfield). Georgie Stegall is researching this line through John's son Frederick.
2. Samuel (b. 1731) who married Jane Unknown and resided in Halfix Co., NC and Brunswick Co., VA. He died prior to June 1795.
3. Thomas (b. ca 1737) married Elizabeth (Unknown) Ingram (extrx. John Ingram, Jr.). He died prior to October 1820.
4. William (b. ca 1739) - no other info.
5. Amy (b. ca 1741) married Burwell Rives and moved to Pittsylvania Co., VA pre 1769.
6. Mary Magdeline (b. ca 1743), mar. in 1761 to Frederick RIVES and moved to Pittsylvania Co., VA pre 1769.
7. Bottom (b. ca 1745; died Brunswick Co., VA). Will recorded May 1811.
He had three known children (from will): Mastain, Dancy and George. (LIZ2558@aol.com, has info. on Bottom's son George Stigall whose branch left VA to KY).
Mastain married Fanny Dickson. in 1793; Dancy married Sarah Unknown, and
served in the Rev. War, 15th Reg., Capt. John Isham's Co., Montgomery Co., VA.;
and third child George, who married in Brunswick Co., VA to Catherine Atkins on Nov. 25, 1800. George and Catherine
moved to KY ca. 1825.
Please let me know if you know of any additional Stegall research books and and/or resources and I'll be happy to add them here!
