My Thomas line begins with Zachariah Thomas, who was born about 1791 in Virginia. He married Lydia Etheridge (born about 1820 in Tenn.)

Zachariah and Lydia THOMAS' "known" children were:

1. John M. Thomas (b. abt. 1846 in Perry Co., TN; died in 1921 in Lobelville, Perry Co., Tenn.
John married Bettie LEWIS, daughter of John C. LEWIS and Ruth B. BAKER, in 1876 in West Plains, Missouri.
John and Bettie Lewis THOMAS had a daughter named Ruthy Ann THOMAS (born Sept. 9, 1877, Perry Co, TN; died 4 Dec. 1942 Humphreys Co., TN). Ruthy married William Franklin OAKLEY (1866-1941) on 17 Sept. 1885 in Linden, Perry Co., TN. (They were my great-g-grandparents).
2. Sarah C. THOMAS (born abt. 1842).
3. David THOMAS (born abt. 1848).
4. Mary D. THOMAS (born abt. 1850).
5. Nancy THOMAS (born abt. 1853).
6. Roda THOMAS (born abt. 1855).
7. Joann THOMAS (born abt. 1858).

Zachariah and Lydia Etheridge THOMAS appeared in the 1850 Dickson County, TN Census as family 325/222.
Zachariah and Lydia Etheridge THOMAS appeared in the 1860 Humphreys County, TN Census as family 89/146.
Lydia Etheridge was residing with her son John M. Thomas in the 1880 Humphreys Co. TN census.

  • 6 Nov. 1997 - Brenda Wyatt (brendajw@iswt.com) is searching her husband's family which has a Jehu THOMAS b. 1809 KY. They lived in KY, TN, IN and Crawford Co. IL.
    Also in Crawford Co.IL in the 1850 Census is Stewart Thomas b. 1822 TN, Zachariah Thomas b. 1819 TN, Urban Thomas b. 1825 IN, Lewis Thomas b. 1829 IN. These men are thought to be brothers of Jehu.
    Jehu Thomas married Abrilla MARTIN. His son James Latten THOMAS b. 1852 IL who married Ellen S. SHIPMAN is my husband's line. She says an older family member told that they were high German from PA. The name Zachariah is used in this family and some of the children were born in TN. It was also said that the father of Jehu Thomas was Zachariah or Henry Thomas.

    ELISHA THOMAS died in St. Michaels, Talbot County, Marylamd in Oct.1880, He has no knowledge of his birthplace. According to his tombstone, he was born in 1819.
    Capt. Elisha THOMAS owned a schooner and made a living by fishing, oystering, and crabbing out of St. Michaels. He married three times:

    Married first to Eliza Burns July 15, 1841 ( d. Mar. 25, 1848)

    Married third to Margaret Enoch Ruth Cheers on Aug. 16, 1864 (b. Jul. 2, 1845; d. Dec. 22, 1935).
    Children of Elisha and Margaret THOMAS:
    Laura B. Thomas (b. about 1866)>BR> Amelia R. Thomas (b. about 1869)
    Franklin C. Thomas (b. about 1874)
